# How to Use a Sandbox Code on a 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server

> How to use a sandbox code on a 7 Days to Die server: build your rules in the game's Sandbox Options, copy the code and paste it into Difficulty code (sandbox).

Since V3.0, a 7 Days to Die dedicated server takes its game rules from one sandbox code: the `SandboxCode` line in `serverconfig.xml`. To change difficulty, XP, loot, day length, zombies, blood moons or traders on FREAKHOSTING, set the options in the game's Sandbox Options menu on your PC, copy the code it generates, paste it into **Difficulty code (sandbox)** on **Game settings** and restart.

| Fact | Value |
| - | - |
| Setting | `SandboxCode` in `serverconfig.xml` |
| Panel field | **Game settings** > **Difficulty and rules** > **Difficulty code (sandbox)** |
| Default code | `AAAJABJACJADJARFBNC` (the old Adventurer difficulty) |
| Options in the code | About 150, in eight groups |

## What the sandbox code controls

The official V3.0 release notes moved these rules out of `serverconfig.xml` and into Sandbox Options:

| Area | Examples |
| - | - |
| Players | XP multiplier, death penalty, items dropped on death and on quit |
| Zombies | Enemy spawning and density, day, night, feral and blood moon speed, feral sense |
| Time and weather | Day cycle length, daylight length, storms |
| Blood moon | Frequency, range, count and warning |
| Loot and damage | Loot abundance, loot respawn days, airdrops, block damage |
| Traders | Trading on or off, trader hours, trader protection, prices |
| Quests | Quests per day |
| Other | Vehicle fuel use, electrical output, fun modes such as big heads |

Settings that are still separate lines, such as server name, player slots, land claims and performance limits, stay on their own fields on **Game settings**.

## How to make and use a sandbox code

**1. Open Sandbox Options in the game**

On your PC, start a new game in 7 Days to Die and open the sandbox options. Start from a preset if you like, then change the options you want. Your PC must run the same game version as the server.

**2. Copy the code**

The game shows a code for your choices. Copy it exactly.

**3. Paste it on Game settings**

In the Game Panel, open **Game settings** > **Difficulty and rules** and paste the code into **Difficulty code (sandbox)**. Click **Review and save**.

**4. Restart**

[Restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md). The game reads the code at start.

Use the sandbox code for these rules even where **Game settings** still shows a separate field, such as blood moons or zombie speed. The game reads the code, not the old settings.

## Does a new code apply to my existing world?

The official notes tell admins who continue an older save to paste their code into `serverconfig.xml`, so the server reads it at every start. If a changed rule doesn't show in your current save, start a new save to be sure: set a new **Save name** (see [reset your world](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/7-days-to-die/how-to-reset-your-7-days-to-die-world.md)).

## Official presets

The game includes ready-made presets such as Undead Matinee, Madmole's Mayhem, Almost Creative Mode, Bite Club, Legacy Survival, 7 Days Later, Caveman's Life, Dumpster Diver, Dying World, Disaster Film and Chibi Mode, plus the classic difficulty presets. Pick one in the game's Sandbox Options and copy its code.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where did XPMultiplier and LootAbundance go?

V3.0 removed them from `serverconfig.xml`. XP and loot are now part of the sandbox code.

### My code worked before an update and now some settings reset. Why?

V3.1 split enemy and animal density and respawn into day and night options. The developers asked admins to check their codes, because an invalid code can reset some or all settings. Make a new code on the current version.

### Can I use the presets on Game settings instead?

The **Presets** on **Game settings** fill in several panel fields at once. For the rules listed above, the sandbox code is what the game uses.

### How do I see which options the server uses?

Type `getsandboxoptions` in the panel console. It lists the sandbox options the server is running with.
