# How to Set a Password on Your ATS Server

> How to set a password on an American Truck Simulator server: edit the password line in server_config.sii in Files, save and restart. Up to 63 characters.

To set a password on a FREAKHOSTING American Truck Simulator server, stop the server, open **Files** > `.local` > `share` > `American Truck Simulator`, and type your password between the quotes in the `password` line of `server_config.sii`, for example `password: "convoy2026"`. Save and start the server, then check the `[MP] Password required:` line in the console. Passwords can be up to 63 characters.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel page |

| Beginner | 3 minutes | Every FREAKHOSTING ATS server | **Files** |

## How to add a password

**1. Stop the server**

[Stop the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md).

**2. Open server\_config.sii**

Open **Files**, go to `.local` > `share` > `American Truck Simulator` and click `server_config.sii`.

**3. Type the password**

Find the `password` line and put your password between the quotes:

```text theme={null}
 password: "convoy2026"
```

**4. Save and start**

Save the file and start the server. Check the `[MP] Password required:` line in the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md).

**5. Share it**

Give the password to your players. The game asks for it when they join your session.

## How to remove the password

Set the line back to empty quotes and restart:

```text theme={null}
 password: ""
```

The console then shows `[MP] Password required: No`, as on a new server.

## Password tips

* Keep the quotes around the password.
* Use letters and numbers so players can type it easily.
* The panel doesn't change this line. Your password stays after restarts and updates.
* Don't reuse your Game Panel or Steam password.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a password field on Startup?

No. On ATS the password lives only in `server_config.sii`.

### My players say the password is wrong. What should I check?

Open `server_config.sii` and check the exact text between the quotes, including capital letters and spaces. Then restart the server, because changes apply on start.

### Can I hide my server instead of using a password?

`show_server` and `friends_only` are not used by the dedicated server, so a password is the way to keep a session private.
