# BeamMP ServerConfig.toml Explained: Every Setting

> BeamMP ServerConfig.toml explained: what Name, AuthKey, Private, MaxCars, Map, Tags, AllowGuests and Debug do, and which you set on Startup at FREAKHOSTING.

`ServerConfig.toml` is the BeamMP server's settings file, in the main folder of **Files** on your FREAKHOSTING server. On our Game Panel, the main settings (name, description, auth key, max players, private, max cars, map and chat logging) come from the **Startup** page and are written into the file at every start. Only `Tags`, `AllowGuests`, `Debug` and `InformationPacket` are changed in the file itself.

| File | Location | Format | Applied |
| - | - | - | - |
| `ServerConfig.toml` | Main folder in **Files** | TOML (`Key = value`) | When the server starts |

## Which settings do I change on Startup?

These keys are rewritten from **Startup** every time the server starts. Edits in the file are replaced.

| Key in the file | **Startup** variable | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| `Name` | **Server Name** | Name in the server list; supports `^` formatting codes |
| `Description` | **Server Description** | Text shown with a public server |
| `AuthKey` | **Authentication Key** | Your Keymaster key; needed to be listed |
| `MaxPlayers` | **Max Players** | Your plan's player slots; more by [ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) |
| `Private` | **Private** | `true` hides the server from the list; people with the IP and port can still join |
| `MaxCars` | **Max Cars** | Cars per player; extra cars are deleted straight away |
| `Map` | **Map** | Map path, for example `/levels/gridmap_v2/info.json` |
| `LogChat` | **Chat logging** | Writes chat messages to the log |

## Which settings do I change in the file?

The panel keeps these as you set them in the file:

| Key | Default on our servers | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| `Tags` | `"Freeroam"` | Comma-separated search tags in the server list |
| `AllowGuests` | `true` | `false` stops players without a BeamMP account from joining |
| `Debug` | `false` | `true` writes much more detail to the log; turn on only while troubleshooting |
| `InformationPacket` | `true` | Lets clients read the server's list information directly from the server |

Leave these alone: `Port` (your server's port, set by the panel), `IP` (`"::"`) and `ResourceFolder` (`"Resources"`). The `[Misc]` section holds `UpdateReminderTime` (`"30s"`, how often the console reminds you about updates) and `ImScaredOfUpdates`.

## How to edit ServerConfig.toml

**1. Open the file**

In the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), click **Files** and open `ServerConfig.toml`. See [the File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md).

**2. Change the value**

Change one of the file-only keys. Text goes in double quotes, true/false without quotes, for example:

```toml theme={null}
Tags = "Freeroam,Drift,Lang:English"
AllowGuests = false
```

**3. Save and restart**

Save the file and [restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md).

## Which tags can I use?

BeamMP's server list uses fixed tags, for example `Freeroam`, `Roleplay`, `Drift`, `Racing`, `Racing:Drag`, `Offroad`, `Crawling`, `Derby`, `Modded`, `Vanilla`, `Moderated`, `Events` and language tags such as `Lang:English` or `Lang:German`. Tags are not case-sensitive. See the full list in the [official BeamMP server documentation](https://docs.beammp.com/server/server-maintenance/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Why did my change in ServerConfig.toml disappear?

You changed a key that comes from **Startup**. Change it on **Startup** instead.

### Can I add a password in ServerConfig.toml?

No. BeamMP has no password setting. See [private servers](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/beammp/setting-a-private-server-password.md).

### What happens if the file has a mistake?

Check the console after the restart for errors. Fix the line (quotes around text, `true`/`false` without quotes), or restore the file from a [backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md).

### What are the extra sections some plugins add?

Sections other than `[General]` and `[Misc]` are reserved for server plugins. Follow the plugin's own instructions.
