# How to Add Admins on a CS:S Server with SourceMod

> Add admins on a Counter-Strike: Source server: install SourceMod, put your SteamID with flags such as "99:z" in admins_simple.ini and run sm_reloadadmins.

To add an admin on a FREAKHOSTING Counter-Strike: Source server, [install SourceMod](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/counter-strike-source/installing-sourcemod-for-css.md), open `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini` in **Files** and add a line with the player's SteamID and flags, for example `"STEAM_0:1:12345678" "99:z"` for full access. Save, then type `sm_reloadadmins` in the console. The admin opens the menu with `sm_admin` or `!admin` in chat.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel page |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 minutes | CS:S servers with SourceMod installed | **Files**, **Console** |

## Before you start

* SourceMod and Metamod:Source must be installed. CS:S has no admin system out of the box. See [install SourceMod](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/counter-strike-source/installing-sourcemod-for-css.md).
* Find the player's SteamID in the form `STEAM_0:X:XXXXXXXX`. A SteamID lookup site such as steamid.io shows it when you paste the player's Steam profile link.

## How to add an admin

**1. Open admins\_simple.ini**

Click **Files** and open `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini`. See [the File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md).

**2. Add a line at the bottom**

Each admin is one line: the identity in quotes, then the immunity and flags in quotes.

```
"STEAM_0:1:12345678" "99:z"
```

**3. Save the file**

Save. Lines starting with `//` are comments and are ignored.

**4. Reload the admin list**

In the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md), type `sm_reloadadmins`. A restart also works.

**5. Test it**

Join the server and type `sm_admin` in your game console, or `!admin` in chat. The admin menu opens.

## The admins\_simple.ini format

```
"<SteamID, !IP or name>" "[immunity:]<flags or @group>" ["password"]
```

| Example | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `"STEAM_0:1:12345678" "99:z"` | Root admin with immunity 99: all permissions |
| `"STEAM_0:0:87654321" "bcd"` | Moderator: generic admin, kick and ban, no immunity |
| `"STEAM_0:1:11223344" "10:bcdefg"` | Admin who can also slay and change maps, immunity 10 |

**Immunity:** an admin can only target admins with a lower or equal immunity number. Use a higher number for senior admins. `0` means no immunity.

## SourceMod admin flags

| Flag | Permission |
| - | - |
| `a` | Reserved slot |
| `b` | Generic admin (needed for any admin) |
| `c` | Kick |
| `d` | Ban |
| `e` | Unban |
| `f` | Slay and harm |
| `g` | Change map and major game settings |
| `h` | Change most cvars |
| `i` | Run config files |
| `j` | Special chat |
| `k` | Start votes |
| `l` | Set a server password |
| `m` | Run RCON commands |
| `n` | Change `sv_cheats` and use cheat commands |
| `o` to `t` | Custom flags 1 to 6 for plugins |
| `z` | Root: every flag, ignores immunity |

## Common admin commands

| Command | What it does |
| - | - |
| `sm_admin` | Opens the admin menu |
| `sm_kick <#userid\|name> [reason]` | Kicks a player |
| `sm_ban <#userid\|name> <minutes\|0> [reason]` | Bans a player; `0` is permanent |
| `sm_unban <steamid\|ip>` | Removes a ban |
| `sm_map <map>` | Changes the map |
| `sm_slay <target>` | Kills a player |
| `sm_who` | Shows who is admin |

In chat, `!` runs a command (`!kick name`) and `/` runs it without showing it to other players.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why doesn't sm\_admin open the menu?

Check that the SteamID is correct and in quotes, that the line has the `b` or `z` flag, and that you ran `sm_reloadadmins`. Type `sm_who` in the console to see whether your account is an admin.

### Can I make an admin without SourceMod?

Not with in-game commands. Without SourceMod you can only manage the server from the panel console or with an **RCON password** set in **Game settings**.

### What is the difference between admins\_simple.ini and admins.cfg?

Both are SourceMod admin files in `configs/`. `admins_simple.ini` is one line per admin and is the easiest to edit. `admins.cfg` uses a nested format with named groups.

### Can I use an IP instead of a SteamID?

Yes, with `!` in front, for example `"!203.0.113.10" "5:z"`. A SteamID is safer because players' IPs change.
