# How to Install SourceMod Plugins on a Counter-Strike: Source Server

> Install SourceMod plugins on a Counter-Strike: Source server: upload the .smx to addons/sourcemod/plugins, add its extra files, then sm plugins refresh.

To install a SourceMod plugin on a FREAKHOSTING Counter-Strike: Source server, upload the plugin's `.smx` file to `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/plugins/` and any `translations`, `gamedata` or `configs` files to the matching folders under `addons/sourcemod/`. Then type `sm plugins refresh` in the console or change the map. Check it with `sm plugins list`. SourceMod must be installed first.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel page |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 minutes per plugin | CS:S servers with SourceMod installed | **Files**, **Console** |

## Before you start

* [Install Metamod:Source and SourceMod](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/counter-strike-source/installing-sourcemod-for-css.md). They are not preinstalled.
* Get plugins from the [AlliedModders plugin list](https://www.sourcemod.net/plugins.php) or the author's GitHub. Check that the plugin supports Counter-Strike: Source.
* Make a [backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md) before adding several plugins.

## How to install a plugin

**1. Download the plugin**

Download the compiled `.smx` file. If the author only offers a `.sp` source file, you need a compiled `.smx`; the server can't run `.sp` files.

**2. Upload the .smx**

In **Files**, open `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/plugins/` and upload the `.smx`.

**3. Upload extra files**

If the plugin comes as a zip with `addons/sourcemod/...` inside, upload the zip to `/cstrike`, click **...** and choose **Unarchive** so every file lands in the right folder. Otherwise copy each folder by hand:

| Plugin folder | Goes to |
| - | - |
| `plugins` | `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/plugins/` |
| `translations` | `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/translations/` |
| `gamedata` | `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/gamedata/` |
| `configs` | `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/configs/` |
| `extensions` | `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/extensions/` (use the Linux `.so` file) |

**4. Load it**

In the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md), type `sm plugins refresh`. A map change or restart also loads new plugins.

**5. Check it**

Type `sm plugins list`. Your plugin should be in the list without an error.

**6. Configure it**

Many plugins create a config file in `/cstrike/cfg/sourcemod/` the first time they load. Edit it, then change the map or restart.

## Plugin commands

| Command | What it does |
| - | - |
| `sm plugins list` | Lists loaded plugins with their numbers |
| `sm plugins refresh` | Loads new plugins and reloads changed ones |
| `sm plugins load <name>` | Loads one plugin, for example `sm plugins load funvotes` |
| `sm plugins unload <name>` | Unloads one plugin until the next map change |
| `sm plugins reload <number>` | Reloads one plugin by its list number |
| `sm plugins info <number>` | Shows details and errors for a plugin |

## How to turn a plugin off

Move the `.smx` into `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled/` with **Move**, then change the map. To turn it back on, move it back into `plugins/`.

SourceMod also keeps some optional plugins in `plugins/disabled/`, such as map voting plugins. Move one into `plugins/` to use it.

## Why a plugin doesn't load

| Error in `sm plugins list` or `sm plugins info` | Fix |
| - | - |
| Plugin isn't in the list | The `.smx` isn't in `addons/sourcemod/plugins/` |
| `Could not find translation file` | Upload the plugin's `translations` files |
| `Native "..." was not found` | An extension is missing or outdated; install what the plugin page lists |
| `Wrong game` or game-specific errors | The plugin is made for another game, such as CS:GO or TF2 |

Plugin errors are also written to `/cstrike/addons/sourcemod/logs/`.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I install CS:GO or CS2 plugins on CS:S?

CS2 plugins (CounterStrikeSharp and similar) don't work on CS:S. Many CS:GO SourceMod plugins don't either. Use plugins that list Counter-Strike: Source as supported.

### Do plugins need a restart?

Usually not. `sm plugins refresh` or a map change loads them. Plugins with extensions or gamedata may need a full restart.

### Where do plugin settings go?

Most plugins use a file in `/cstrike/cfg/sourcemod/` or a cvar you can add to `server.cfg`. The plugin page tells you which.
