# CS:GO Server Game Modes: game_type and game_mode Values

> CS:GO server game modes: Casual is game_type 0 game_mode 0, Competitive 0 1, Wingman 0 2, Arms Race 1 0, Demolition 1 1, Deathmatch 1 2. Set them on Startup.

A CS:GO server's game mode comes from two numbers, `game_type` and `game_mode`. Casual is `0` `0`, Competitive `0` `1`, Wingman `0` `2`, Arms Race `1` `0`, Demolition `1` `1` and Deathmatch `1` `2`. On FREAKHOSTING, set them in **Game Type** and **Game Mode** on **Startup**, change the matching lines in `csgo/cfg/server.cfg` to the same values, and restart.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel pages |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 minutes | Every FREAKHOSTING CS:GO server | **Startup**, **Files** |

## Which game\_type and game\_mode do I use?

| Mode | Game Type (`game_type`) | Game Mode (`game_mode`) | Map group (`mapgroup`) |
| - | - | - | - |
| Classic Casual | `0` | `0` | `mg_casualsigma` or `mg_casualdelta` |
| Classic Competitive (default) | `0` | `1` | `mg_active` |
| Wingman (2v2) | `0` | `2` | Use a Wingman map |
| Arms Race | `1` | `0` | `mg_armsrace` |
| Demolition | `1` | `1` | `mg_demolition` |
| Deathmatch | `1` | `2` | `mg_deathmatch` |

A map group is a list of maps that belong to a mode. Set **Map** to a map from the same group, or the mode may not load as expected.

## How to change the game mode on your CS:GO server

**1. Set Game Type and Game Mode**

In the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), open **Startup** and enter the two numbers from the table in **Game Type** and **Game Mode**. Each field accepts a number from `0` to `5`. Values save when you click away.

**2. Match server.cfg**

Open **Files**, go to `csgo/cfg/` and open `server.cfg`. It also has `game_type`, `game_mode` and `mapgroup` lines. Change them to the same values, for example for Deathmatch:

```cfg theme={null}
game_type 1
game_mode 2
mapgroup mg_deathmatch
```

Save the file. If the two places disagree, the mode can switch back when `server.cfg` runs.

**3. Pick a fitting map**

Set **Map** on **Startup** to a map that suits the mode. See [change the map](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/csgo/how-to-change-the-map-on-your-csgo-server.md).

**4. Restart and check**

[Restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md). Join and check that the mode matches.

## How to change mode settings such as round time or bots

Each mode has its own Valve config file in `csgo/cfg`, such as `gamemode_deathmatch.cfg`. Don't edit it. Create `gamemode_deathmatch_server.cfg` (or the matching name for your mode) in the same folder and put your own settings there. The game runs it every time that mode loads.

| Mode | Your override file |
| - | - |
| Casual | `gamemode_casual_server.cfg` |
| Competitive | `gamemode_competitive_server.cfg` |
| Wingman | `gamemode_competitive2v2_server.cfg` |
| Arms Race | `gamemode_armsrace_server.cfg` |
| Demolition | `gamemode_demolition_server.cfg` |
| Deathmatch | `gamemode_deathmatch_server.cfg` |

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the default game mode on my CS:GO server?

Classic Competitive: **Game Type** `0` and **Game Mode** `1`, on `de_dust2`.

### Why did my server go back to Competitive?

`server.cfg` still has `game_type 0` and `game_mode 1`. Change those lines to match **Startup** and restart.

### Can I run Danger Zone on my server?

Not with these settings. Danger Zone uses `game_type` `6`, and **Game Type** accepts `0` to `5` only.

### How do I remove bots in Competitive?

Create `gamemode_competitive_server.cfg` in `csgo/cfg` with the line `bot_quota 0`, then restart. To remove bots right away, type `bot_kick` in the console.
