# Fix E_INVALID_TOKEN: DST Server Will Not Start

> Don't Starve Together server says E_INVALID_TOKEN and Your Server Will Not Start? Paste a valid Klei cluster token into Server Token on Startup and restart.

`E_INVALID_TOKEN` means your Don't Starve Together server has no valid Klei cluster token, so the world never starts. To fix it, create a token on the [Klei account game servers page](https://accounts.klei.com/account/game/servers?game=DontStarveTogether), paste it into **Server Token** on the **Startup** page of the Game Panel and restart. Then check the console: the error should be gone. If no token is set at all, the server stops straight away with the console message `No Klei cluster token set`.

## What the error looks like

Open the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md) after you start the server. With a missing or wrong token you see these lines:

to generate server configuration files
```

The panel can still show **Online** a moment after you press **Start**. The status only tells you the server process is running, not that your world has loaded. The console is the place to check.

## How to fix E\_INVALID\_TOKEN

**1. Get a token**

Go to the [Klei game servers page](https://accounts.klei.com/account/game/servers?game=DontStarveTogether), enter a name and click **Add New Server**. Copy the token. **2. Paste it on Startup**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), click **Startup** and replace everything in **Server Token** with your token. Click outside the field so it saves.

**3. Restart**

**4. Check the console again**

Watch the console. If `E_INVALID_TOKEN` no longer appears, the token is accepted. Search for your **Server name** in **Browse Games** in the game to confirm.

## Still seeing the error?

| Placeholder text still in **Server Token** | Replace it with a real token from your Klei account |
| Token copied with a space or line break | Paste it again, with nothing before or after it |
| Only part of the token copied | Copy the whole token from the Klei website |
| Still unsure about the old token | Make a new one on the Klei website and paste it in |
| Server not restarted | The server only reads the token at start. Restart it |

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does my DST server show Online when it will not start?

The panel shows the server process as running. With an invalid token, Don't Starve Together stops before the world loads, so players can't join. Check the console for `E_INVALID_TOKEN`.

### What does "No auth token could be found" mean?

It is part of the same message. The server didn't find a valid cluster token. Paste one into **Server Token** on **Startup** and restart.

### Do I need to restart after changing the token?

Yes. The server reads the token only when it starts.

### Can I play without a token?

Not on an online server. Klei requires a cluster token for every online Don't Starve Together dedicated server.
