# How to Add Admins to a Don't Starve Together Server

> Add admins to a Don't Starve Together dedicated server: find each player's Klei User ID (KU_), add it to adminlist.txt in the File Manager and restart.

To add admins to a FREAKHOSTING Don't Starve Together server, find each player's Klei User ID (it starts with `KU_`), create `adminlist.txt` in `DoNotStarveTogether/config/server/` with one ID per line, and restart the server. Admins can then kick and ban from the scoreboard and run commands in the game console in remote mode (press Ctrl).

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel page |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 to 10 minutes | Every FREAKHOSTING Don't Starve Together server | **Files** |

## Before you start

* Log in to the [Game Panel](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-login-and-access-the-game-panel.md) and open your server.
* Have the Klei User ID of every player you want as admin.
* The **Game settings** page has no admin list. You add admins with a file.

## How to find your Klei User ID

A Klei User ID (KU ID) is the ID of your Klei account. It looks like `KU_xXxXxxxX`.

| Platform | How to find it |
| - | - |
| Steam or WeGame | On the main menu, click **Account** in the lower-left corner. Your ID is on the **USER INFO** page that opens in your browser |
| PlayStation, Xbox or Switch | Open **Options** on the main menu, then **More** |

## How to add admins with adminlist.txt

**1. Stop the server**

[Stop the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) before you edit files.

**2. Open the cluster folder**

Click **Files** and go to `DoNotStarveTogether/config/server/`. This is the folder that holds `cluster.ini`. See the [File Manager guide](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md).

**3. Create adminlist.txt**

Create a new file called `adminlist.txt`. Add one Klei User ID per line, with nothing else on the line:

```text theme={null}
KU_AbC12345
KU_dEf67890
```

Save the file.

**4. Start the server**

Start the server. The players in the list are admins the next time they join.

If `adminlist.txt` is missing or empty, the only admin is the Klei account the cluster token belongs to.

## How to use admin powers in game

| Task | How |
| - | - |
| Kick a player | Open the scoreboard (player list) in game and use the kick option next to the player |
| Run an admin command | Open the console with `~`, press Ctrl to switch to remote mode, then type the command |
| Ban by Klei User ID | In remote mode, type `TheNet:Ban("KU_AbC12345")` |
| Save the world now | In remote mode, type `c_save()` |

Most admin commands only work on a dedicated server when sent in remote mode. See [console commands](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/dont-starve-together/dont-starve-together-server-console-commands.md) for more, including commands you can type straight into the Game Panel console.

## How to ban players with blocklist.txt

You can also block players before they join. Create `blocklist.txt` in the same `DoNotStarveTogether/config/server/` folder with one Klei User ID per line, then restart.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why am I not admin on my own DST server?

Check that your KU ID is spelled exactly in `adminlist.txt`, including `KU_`, and that the file is in `DoNotStarveTogether/config/server/`. Restart the server after editing it.

### Can I add admins without restarting?

Restart after editing `adminlist.txt`. The server reads the list when it starts.

### Is a Steam ID the same as a Klei User ID?

No. Don't Starve Together uses the Klei User ID, which always starts with `KU_`.

### Can I run admin commands without joining the game?

Yes. Commands typed into the Game Panel console run on the server directly. See [console commands](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/dont-starve-together/dont-starve-together-server-console-commands.md).
