# Enshrouded Server Password Not Working? Wrong Password Fixes

> Enshrouded server password not working? The join password is set in Game settings, not on Startup. Set it there, restart, and type it exactly as saved.

If your Enshrouded server password isn't working, set it again in the one place that controls it: **Server password** in **Game settings** under **GAME SETTINGS** in the Game Panel. Click **Review and save**, restart the server and type the password exactly as saved. The server only uses a new password after a restart.

## Where the Enshrouded password is stored

Enshrouded no longer uses a single server password. Each player group in `enshrouded_server.json` has its own password, and your server's first group, "Default", holds the password players use. **Server password** in **Game settings** is that password, so always set it there.

## How to fix a password that doesn't work

**1. Open Game settings**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Game settings** under **GAME SETTINGS**.

**2. Set the password**

Click **Change** next to **Server password**, type the password in **New value** and click **Done**.

**3. Save**

Click **Review and save**, then **Save changes**.

**4. Restart**

Click **Restart now** and **Restart**. The server only uses the new password after a restart.

**5. Join and type it carefully**

Type the password by hand rather than pasting it, so no extra space is copied, and match any capitals.

## Other reasons a password fails

| Cause | Fix |
| - | - |
| You didn't restart after changing it | Restart the server |
| The password was set somewhere other than **Game settings** | Set it in **Game settings** and restart |
| You are using an old password | Read the current one in the raw file (see below) |
| The player used another group's password | That works, but gives that group's permissions. Check which group they need |
| Joining the wrong server | Check the server name in the list |

## How to see the current password

Click "enshrouded\_server.json: open the raw file" at the bottom of **Game settings**. The first `"password"` inside `"userGroups"` is the "Default" group's password. Other groups below it have their own passwords.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why did my server have a password I never set?

The game makes a random password the first time the server starts. Replace it in **Game settings**.

### Can I remove the password?

Yes. Click **Remove** next to **Server password**, save and restart. Anyone who finds the server can then join.

### Does Enshrouded show a password box when joining?

Yes. When a server has passwords, Enshrouded asks for one when you join it.
