# How to Set a Password on Your ETS2 Server

> How to set a password on your Euro Truck Simulator 2 server: edit the password key in server_config.sii in Files, restart, and check Password required: Yes.

To set a password on your Euro Truck Simulator 2 server, open **Files** in the Game Panel, go to `.local/share/Euro Truck Simulator 2`, open `server_config.sii` and change `password: ""` to `password: "yourpassword"`. Save and restart. The console then shows `[MP] Password required: Yes`, and players must enter the password to join from the Convoy browser.

## How to add a password

**1. Stop the server**

**2. Open server\_config.sii**

Open **Files**, go to `.local` > `share` > `Euro Truck Simulator 2` and open `server_config.sii`. See [File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md).

**3. Set the password**

Find the `password` line and put your password between the quotes, up to 63 characters:

password: "convoy2026"
```

**4. Save and start**

Save the file and start the server. In the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md), check for `[MP] Password required: Yes`.

The password stays in the file after restarts. There is no **Startup** field for it, so the panel doesn't overwrite it.

## How to remove the password

Set the line back to empty quotes and restart:

```text theme={null}
password: ""
```

The console then shows `[MP] Password required: No`.

## How players join a passworded session

Players open **Convoy** in Euro Truck Simulator 2, search for your **Lobby name**, select the session and enter the password when the game asks. Share the password privately, not in the `description` or `welcome_message`, because other players can see those.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I set the ETS2 server password in the Game Panel?

Not on **Startup**. The password is only in `server_config.sii`, which you edit in **Files**.

### Why doesn't my password work?

Check that it is inside double quotes on one line, that you saved the file and that you restarted the server. Then check the `Password required` line in the console.

### Can I hide my server instead of using a password?

The `show_server` and `friends_only` keys are not used by a dedicated server. Use a password to keep the session private.
