RAM grows with view distance. The biggest performance setting on a Hytale server is view distance. Hytale recommends a maximum of 12 chunks (384 blocks) for performance and gameplay, because memory use grows mainly with the loaded world area. On FREAKHOSTING, open **Game settings**, choose the **Light on memory** preset (12 chunks) or lower **View distance** yourself, click **Review and save** and restart. Hytale's 12 chunks are about 24 Minecraft chunks, so a Hytale world uses more RAM at the same setting number than you may expect. ## How to lower the view distance **1. Open Game settings** Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Game settings** under **GAME SETTINGS**. **2. Choose Light on memory** Click **Presets** and choose **Light on memory** ("A view distance of 12 chunks"). Or set **View distance** in the **Server** section yourself. The page's default is 32 chunks. **3. Review and save** Click **Review and save**, then **Save changes**. **4. It shows CPU and memory over the last hour, day, week or month. If memory stays near your limit and CPU climbs at the same time, the server is short of memory: lower the view distance first. [Alerts](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-set-up-server-alerts.md) can warn you when this happens. ## Other ways to reduce lag * **Restart regularly.** A nightly [schedule](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-configure-schedules-and-tasks.md) restart clears memory and picks up updates. * **Limit NPCs.** In a world's `config.json`, `IsSpawningNPC` controls natural NPC spawning. Your server uses the memory in your plan. To get more, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) and we help you move to a plan with more RAM. You don't need to set Java memory flags yourself. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is the best view distance for a Hytale server? 12 chunks or less. That is Hytale's own recommendation for performance and gameplay. ### Why does my Hytale server use so much RAM right after start? Hytale loads the world around each player. A high view distance means more loaded chunks and more memory. ### Does lowering view distance affect gameplay? Players see less far. At 12 chunks they still see 384 blocks. ### Can I pre-generate my world to reduce lag? Hytale has no built-in pre-generation setting in the panel.
