# Does Hytale Need a Proxy? Multiserver Networks Explained

> Hytale needs no BungeeCord-style proxy: servers move players natively with player referral and connection redirect. How it works and what a network needs.

No. Hytale doesn't need a proxy such as BungeeCord or Velocity to link servers. Its servers can move players between each other natively: player referral sends a connected player to another server's host and port, and connection redirect lets a server send a joining player elsewhere during the handshake. A FREAKHOSTING multiserver network is simply several Hytale servers, each with its own address, plus a plugin that uses these features.

| Feature | Status | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| Player referral | Available | Sends a connected player to another server, with an optional payload of up to 4 KB |
| Connection redirect | Available | Rejects a joining player during the handshake and sends them to another server |
| Disconnect fallback | Coming soon | Reconnects players to a fallback server after an unexpected disconnect |
| Custom proxy | Possible | Build your own with Netty QUIC and the packet definitions in `HytaleServer.jar` |

## How does player referral work?

A plugin on server A tells the game to refer a player to server B's host and port. The player's client then connects to server B. The referral can carry a small payload (up to 4 KB) with data for server B, for example which game mode the player picked in a lobby.

> [!WARNING]
>
> The referral payload passes through the player's client, so a player can change it. Sign payloads, for example with HMAC and a secret key that only your servers know, so server B can check that the data really came from server A.

## How does connection redirect work?

When a player connects, the server can refuse the connection during the handshake and send the player to another server instead. Networks use this for load balancing (sending players to the least busy server) or to make everyone start in a lobby first.

## What do I need for a Hytale server network on FREAKHOSTING?

**1. One server per part of your network**

For example, one lobby server and one or more game servers. Each has its own address and port in the Game Panel.

**2. Each server set up on its own**

Each server completes its first start and gets its settings on its own **Game settings** page. See [getting started](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/hytale/getting-started-with-your-hytale-server.md).

**3. A plugin that moves players**

Referral and redirect are used through plugins. Install the plugin on each server in `mods`. See [install mods](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/hytale/how-to-install-mods-on-your-hytale-server.md).

**4. The same game version everywhere**

Every server must be on exactly the same Hytale version as your players. See [update your server](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/hytale/how-to-update-your-hytale-server.md).

## Can I still run my own proxy?

Yes. Hytale's protocol is QUIC, so a custom proxy can be built with Netty QUIC and the packet definitions inside `HytaleServer.jar`. Classic Minecraft proxies don't work with Hytale. For most networks, referral and redirect are enough.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does BungeeCord or Velocity work with Hytale?

No. They are built for Minecraft. Hytale has its own native referral and redirect instead.

### Can players be sent back to the lobby if a game server crashes?

Hytale plans a disconnect fallback that reconnects players to a fallback server after an unexpected disconnect. It is not available yet.

### Do all servers in the network need the same mods?

Each server needs the plugin that handles the transfers. Other mods depend on what each server does.

### Will the network show as one server in a list?

Hytale's official server discovery is planned but not available yet. Share your lobby server's address with your players.
