# What Port Does a Hytale Server Use? (UDP 5520 and QUIC)

> A Hytale server uses UDP port 5520 by default and QUIC, not TCP. Find your server's port in the Game Panel; no port forwarding is needed on FREAKHOSTING.

A Hytale server uses UDP port 5520 by default. Hytale talks over the QUIC protocol, which runs on UDP, so no TCP port is needed. On FREAKHOSTING your server's exact port is part of the address on **Overview** and **Network** in the Game Panel, for example `203.0.113.10:5520`. The server is already reachable on that address, so you and your players don't need to set up port forwarding.

| Fact | Value |
| - | - |
| Default port | 5520 |
| Protocol | QUIC over UDP |
| TCP needed | No |
| Your port | Shown in the address on **Overview** and **Network** |
| Port forwarding | Not needed on a hosted server |

## How to find your Hytale server's port

**1. Open your server**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com).

**2. Read the address**

**Overview** shows the **ADDRESS**, for example `203.0.113.10:5520`. The number after the colon is your port. **Network** lists the same address as your primary allocation.

Your port can differ from 5520. Always give players the full address from the panel.

## What is QUIC, and why does Hytale use UDP?

QUIC is a modern network protocol that runs over UDP. Hytale uses it instead of TCP for its game traffic. QUIC handles NAT (the address sharing a home router does) well in most cases. That is why players normally don't need to change anything on their router.

## Do I need to port forward for Hytale?

| You are | Port forwarding |
| - | - |
| Hosting on FREAKHOSTING | Not needed. The server has its own public address. |
| A player joining a server | Not needed. |
| Hosting a server at home | Forward UDP 5520 (or your custom port) on your router. TCP forwarding is not required. |

A home connection behind symmetric NAT can cause problems for a self-hosted Hytale server. Hosting the server in a data centre, as FREAKHOSTING does, avoids this.

## Can I get a second port for my Hytale server?

Your server has one port for the game. Plugins that open their own web or query port need an extra one. [Open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) and ask for an extra port.

## How is my Hytale server protected from attacks?

If you see attack traffic on your server, you can apply DDoS filters to its address in the firewall panel. See [DDoS filters](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-apply-ddos-filters.md).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Hytale port TCP or UDP?

UDP. Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, and TCP forwarding is not required.

### Can I change my Hytale server's port?

The port comes from your server's allocation in the panel. If you need a different one, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php).

### Why does my NAT type say restricted?

That is a setting of the network you play from, not of the server. QUIC works through most home routers. If you can't connect at all, see [slow connection and world not loading](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/hytale/slow-connection-and-world-not-loading-fix.md).

### Do I need to enter the port when I join?

Yes, add it after the IP with a colon, for example `203.0.113.10:5520`.
