# How to Become Admin on Your Icarus Dedicated Server

> How to become admin on an Icarus dedicated server: set AdminPassword in ServerSettings.ini, restart, then type /AdminLogin and your password in the chat.

To become admin on an Icarus dedicated server, set `AdminPassword=YourPassword` in `Icarus/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini`, restart the server, join and type `/AdminLogin YourPassword` in the chat. You can then kick, ban, return the server to the lobby and manage prospects. If `AdminPassword` is empty, anyone who types `/AdminLogin` becomes admin.

## Before you start

* You need `ServerSettings.ini`. If it isn't there yet, create it as shown in [getting started](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/icarus/getting-started-with-your-icarus-server.md#how-to-create-serversettings-ini).

## How to set the Icarus admin password

**1. Stop the server**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Stop**.

**2. Open ServerSettings.ini**

Click **Files** and open `Icarus` > `Saved` > `Config` > `WindowsServer` > `ServerSettings.ini`.

**3. Set AdminPassword**

Change the line to your own password:

```ini theme={null}
AdminPassword=Str0ng-Admin-Pass
```

**4. Save and start**

Click **Save Content**, then **Start**.

## How to log in as admin in game

Join the server and open the chat. Type a `/` or `\`, the command and your password:

```text theme={null}
/AdminLogin Str0ng-Admin-Pass
```

In the **Server Lobby** (before a prospect is loaded) you can leave out the slash.

## What admins can do

| Command | What it does |
| - | - |
| `KickPlayer <SteamId or name>` | Kicks a player. They can rejoin. |
| `BanPlayer <SteamId or name>` | Kicks and bans a player. |
| `UnbanPlayer <SteamId or name>` | Removes a ban. |
| `ReturnToLobby` | Kicks everyone and returns the server to the lobby. |
| `AdminSay <message>` | Shows a message to all players. |

## How to limit what non-admins can do

Two keys in `ServerSettings.ini` control the lobby:

| Key | Default | What it controls |
| - | - | - |
| `AllowNonAdminsToLaunchProspects` | `True` | `True`: anyone in the lobby can create or load a prospect. `False`: admin login needed. |
| `AllowNonAdminsToDeleteProspects` | `False` | `True`: anyone in the lobby can delete prospects. `False`: admin login needed. |

Set `AllowNonAdminsToLaunchProspects=False` on a public server so strangers can't switch your prospect.

## Admin whitelist and ban list files

The ICARUS Wiki lists two more files in `Icarus/Saved`:

| File | What it holds |
| - | - |
| `AdminWhitelist.txt` | One Steam ID per line. These players can return to the lobby and kick players without the admin password. |
| `PlayerBanList.txt` | The players banned with `BanPlayer`. |

Create `AdminWhitelist.txt` with **New file** in **Files** if you want to use it, with the server stopped. The wiki notes that using the whitelist disables the prospect delete button once a prospect has loaded.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I run admin commands from the panel console?

Type Icarus admin commands in the in-game chat. The panel [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md) shows the server log.

### How do I give a friend panel access without my password?

Add them on **Users** in the Game Panel with only the permissions they need. See [sub-users](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-manage-sub-users.md). Game admin and panel access are separate.

### I forgot the admin password. What now?

Open `ServerSettings.ini` in **Files** with the server stopped. The password is on the `AdminPassword` line. Change it if needed and start the server.
