# How to Set a Password on Your Icarus Dedicated Server

> How to set a password on an Icarus dedicated server: add JoinPassword to ServerSettings.ini in Files and restart. Leave it empty for an open server.

To set a password on an Icarus dedicated server, stop the server, open `Icarus/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini` in **Files**, set `JoinPassword=YourPassword` under `[/Script/Icarus.DedicatedServerSettings]`, save and start the server. Players then enter the password when they join. Leave `JoinPassword=` empty for a server without a password.

## Before you start

* You need `ServerSettings.ini`. If the file isn't in `Icarus/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/` yet, create it as shown in [getting started](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/icarus/getting-started-with-your-icarus-server.md#how-to-create-serversettings-ini).

## How to set or change the Icarus server password

**1. Stop the server**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Stop**.

**2. Open ServerSettings.ini**

Click **Files**, open `Icarus` > `Saved` > `Config` > `WindowsServer` and click `ServerSettings.ini`.

**3. Set JoinPassword**

Change the `JoinPassword` line, for example:

```ini theme={null}
JoinPassword=wolfpack2026
```

**4. Save and start**

Click **Save Content**, then **Start**.

## How to remove the password

Set the line to `JoinPassword=` with nothing after it, save and restart. The server is then open to anyone who finds it.

## Join password and admin password

| Key | Who uses it | What it does |

| `AdminPassword` | You and your admins | Typed with `/AdminLogin` in the chat to get admin rights |

## If the password doesn't work

1. **Check the file name and folder.** It must be `ServerSettings.ini` in `Icarus/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/`.
2. **Check the section line.** The first line must be `[/Script/Icarus.DedicatedServerSettings]`.
3. **Restart after a change.** The server reads the file when it starts.
4. **Type it exactly.** Retype it by hand instead of pasting, and match capitals.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I set the password on the Startup page?

No. **Startup** only has **Server Name**, **\[REQUIRED] Server Query Port** and **AUTO\_UPDATE**. The password is set in `ServerSettings.ini`.

### Can I use spaces in the password?

Stick to letters, numbers and simple symbols such as `-` and `_` so everyone can type it.

### Can I whitelist players instead?

RocketWerkz's server settings have no join whitelist. Use a join password, and [ban](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/icarus/icarus-admin-commands.md) players who shouldn't be there.
