# How to Install Controlled Difficulty (Hardcore Mode) in KF2

> Install the Controlled Difficulty mutator on your KF2 server for precision control over Zed spawns, wave composition, and difficulty scaling in matches.

> For professional Killing Floor 2 teams, even "Hell on Earth" can eventually become predictable. **Controlled Difficulty (CD)** is a specialized mutator that allows admins to define exact spawn cycles, increase the max number of Zeds alive simultaneously, and force specific squad compositions (e.g., constant Fleshpound waves).

## 1. Installation

1. Download the latest version of Controlled Difficulty from the **Steam Workshop** or GitHub.
2. Add the Workshop ID to your server's [Subscription list](/games/killing-floor-2/how-to-setup-custom-mapsworkshop-in-kf2).
3. Activate it by adding the following to your Startup Arguments:
   `?Mutator=ControlledDifficulty.CD_Survival`

## 2. Configuration (CDConfig.json)

Unlike standard mutators, CD uses a separate `.json` file located in the server's root directory. This is where you define:

* **Spawn Modifiers:** Increase the total Zed count beyond the default limits.
* **Squad Presets:** Load specialized wave patterns used in competitive tournaments.

  ### CPU Performance

  Running Controlled Difficulty with high Zed counts (e.g., 100+ Zeds alive at once) is extremely CPU-intensive. If you notice "Z-Warping" or lag, reduce your spawn multipliers.
