# How to Let Bedrock Players Join Your Java Server with GeyserMC

> Set up Geyser and Floodgate on your Paper server so Bedrock players on Windows, phones and tablets can play alongside Java players, without a Java account.

Geyser translates between Bedrock Edition and Java Edition, so players on phones, tablets and Windows can join your Java server. Floodgate lets them join without a Java account.

## Before you start

* Your server runs **Paper** or a Paper fork (Purpur, Pufferfish). Use **Version Changer** if not. See [server configuration](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/minecraft/server-configuration.md#change-your-server-type-or-version).
* Bedrock players need **their own port**. Geyser can't share your Java port. [Open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) and ask for an extra port for Geyser. We tell you the port number when it's added.
* Make a backup.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Geyser supports the newest Minecraft versions. If your server runs an older version, also install **ViaVersion** so Geyser can connect. See [popular setups](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/minecraft/popular-setups.md#let-older-and-newer-clients-join).

## Install Geyser and Floodgate

**1. Install Geyser**

Click **Plugins**, search for **Geyser** (Modrinth or Hangar) and install the version for your server. See [install a plugin](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/minecraft/plugins-mods-modpacks.md#install-a-plugin).

**2. Install Floodgate**

Search for **Floodgate** and install it the same way.

**3. Restart once**

Restart the server so both plugins create their config files.

***

## Configure Geyser

**1. Stop the server**

Click **Stop**.

**2. Open the config**

In **Files**, open `plugins/Geyser-Spigot/config.yml`.

**3. Set the Bedrock port**

In the `bedrock:` section, set `port:` to the extra port we gave you:

```yaml theme={null}
bedrock:
  port: 19133
```

Use your own port number. `19133` is only an example.

**4. Use Floodgate for logins**

Find `auth-type` and set it to `floodgate`:

```yaml theme={null}
auth-type: floodgate
```

**5. Save and start**

Click **Save Content** and start the server. The console shows that Geyser started on your Bedrock port.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Geyser's config layout changes between releases. If you can't find a key, search the file for it, or check the [GeyserMC setup guide](https://geysermc.org/wiki/geyser/setup/).

### Floodgate settings

Floodgate's config is `plugins/floodgate/config.yml`. By default, Bedrock players' names start with a dot (for example `.Steve`) so they never clash with Java names. You can change this with `username-prefix`.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Never share `plugins/floodgate/key.pem`. Anyone with it can pretend to be any Bedrock player on your server.

To add a Bedrock player to the whitelist, use `fwhitelist add <name>` in the console.

## Connecting from Bedrock

### Windows, phones and tablets

**1. Open Servers**

In Minecraft Bedrock, click **Play**, then the **Servers** tab, then **Add Server**.

**2. Enter the details**

* **Server Name**: anything you like.
* **Server Address**: your server's IP without the port, for example `203.0.113.10`.
* **Port**: the extra Geyser port.

**3. Join**

Click **Save**, then select the server to join.

### Xbox, PlayStation and Switch

Consoles only show featured servers and can't add custom ones directly. Common workarounds are the **BedrockTogether** phone app (on the same home network) or a **BedrockConnect** DNS server. These are third-party tools, so follow their own instructions.

## Troubleshooting

> **Bedrock players get Unable to connect to world**
>
> * Check `port:` in Geyser's config matches the extra port we gave you, and that you restarted.
> * Check Bedrock players entered the IP and port separately.
> * Look in the console for Geyser errors when the server starts.

> **Bedrock players get Outdated client or server**
>
> Players should update Minecraft Bedrock to the newest version, and you should update Geyser on the **Plugins** page. New Bedrock releases need a Geyser update.

> **Bedrock players are asked to sign in to a Java account**
>
> Floodgate isn't working. Check that Floodgate is installed and enabled on **Plugins** > **Installed**, and that `auth-type` is `floodgate`.

> **Some blocks, items or plugins look wrong for Bedrock players**
>
> Bedrock and Java differ in a few ways, and some features (such as certain custom items and inventory menus) don't translate perfectly. That's a Geyser limitation.
