# How to Download and Install Minecraft Maps on Your Server

> Download Minecraft maps for your server in one click: open Worlds, pick a CurseForge map, click Install, choose the folder and active world, then restart.

To download a Minecraft map for your FREAKHOSTING server, open your server in the Game Panel, click **Worlds**, find a map from CurseForge, click **Install** next to a file, choose whether it becomes the active world and click **Install world**. The panel downloads, checks and unpacks the map into a new folder. Restart the server to load it.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel page |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 2–5 minutes | All Minecraft: Java Edition servers | Worlds |

## Before you start

* Make a backup if your current world matters to you: **Backups** > **Create backup**. Installing a map never overwrites a world folder, but a backup is still the safest way to go back.
* Check your free disk space. Some maps are several hundred MB.

## How to install a map from the Worlds page

**1. Open Worlds**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Worlds** in the sidebar. The **Browse** tab lists worlds from **CurseForge**. **Minecraft version** is set to your server's version.

**2. Pick a map and file**

Search or sort by **Popularity**, then click a map. **Files for this server** lists files made for your Minecraft version. A **Recommended** badge marks the best match. Switch on **Show all versions** to see other files. Click **Install**.

**3. Choose the install options**

| Option | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Folder name** | Optional. Leave it empty to use the map's name. The world always goes into a new folder. If the name is taken, a number is added. |
| **Make this the active world** | Sets `level-name` in `server.properties` to the new folder. Nothing else in the file changes. The server uses it after its next restart. |
| **Replace an existing world** | Moves the old world to a backup folder named like `<name>.old-<date>` and gives the new world its folder name. The old world stays on the server until you delete it. |

**4. Click Install world**

The progress window runs through **Check the world file**, **Download and verify it**, **Check the archive**, **Unpack it**, **Move it into place** and **Make it the active world**. You can click **Continue in background**. In our test a 269 MB map took about 20 seconds.

**5. Restart the server**

Click **Restart**. Players join straight into the new map.

## How to switch, rename or delete worlds

Open the **Installed** tab. Each world shows its folder name, where it came from, its size and when it last changed.

Installed worlds

| Button | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Active** / **Set active** | **Active** marks the world the server loads. **Set active** switches to another world after the next restart. |
| **Rename** | Renames the world folder. |
| **Delete** | Deletes the world folder. Use it to remove old `.old-<date>` copies you no longer need. |

## Why can't I install some maps?

Some authors don't allow downloads through other sites. Their maps show **Downloads disabled by the author**. Download the map from CurseForge yourself, then [upload it to your server](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/minecraft/how-to-upload-a-custom-world-to-minecraft.md).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does installing a map delete my current world?

No. A map always goes into a new folder. With **Replace an existing world** on, the old world is moved to a `.old-<date>` folder, not deleted.

### How do I go back to my old world?

Open **Worlds** > **Installed**, click **Set active** on your old world and restart.

### Do players need to download the map?

No. The map runs on the server. Players only need the right Minecraft version, plus any resource pack the map's page asks for.

### Can I play a one-block or skyblock map on my server?

Yes, if it is offered as a world download. Search for it on the **Browse** tab.
