# How to Set a Password on Your Mordhau Server

> Set a password on your Mordhau server: enter up to 20 characters in Server Password on the Startup page and restart. Leave it empty to make it public again.

To set a password on a Mordhau server, open your server in the Game Panel, click **Startup**, enter up to 20 characters in **Server Password** and restart the server. Players then need that password to join. To make the server public again, empty **Server Password** and restart. The **Admin Password** is a different password, used for `adminlogin`.

## How to set a join password

**1. Open Startup**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Startup**.

**2. Enter the password**

Type the password in **Server Password** (up to 20 characters). The field saves when you click away.

**3. Restart the server**

[Restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md). The panel writes the password into `Game.ini` as the server starts.

**4. Test it**

Join your server and enter the password when the game asks for it.

## Which password is which?

| Field | Used for | Who needs it |
| - | - | - |
| **Server Password** | Joining the server | Every player |
| **Admin Password** | `adminlogin` in the console for admin rights | Only admins |
| Your panel password | Logging in to the Game Panel and SFTP | Only you and your sub-users |

Use different passwords for these. Never give players your **Admin Password**.

## Why not edit ServerPassword in Game.ini?

`Game.ini` has a `ServerPassword=` line, but the panel writes it from **Server Password** every time the server starts. A password typed into the file is replaced at the next start. Always change it on **Startup**.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I remove the password from my Mordhau server?

Clear **Server Password** on **Startup** and restart the server. It is then public again.

### Can I change the password while the server is running?

Yes. Change **Server Password** on **Startup** at any time. The new password applies after the next restart.

### Can I only let certain players join?

Use a password and share it only with your players. [Kick or ban](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/mordhau/advanced-admin-management.md) anyone who shouldn't be there.
