# How to Set a Password on Your open.mp Server

> Set a password on your open.mp server: in Game settings click Set next to Server password, review and save, restart. Players then enter it when joining.

To set a password on your open.mp server, open **Game settings** in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), click **Set** next to **Server password** in the **Server** section, type the password, click **Review and save**, then **Save changes**, and restart. Players must then enter the password when they join. Leave the field empty for an open server.

## Server password or RCON password?

| Password | Who uses it | Where to set it |

| **RCON password** | Admins only, to run `/rcon` commands | **Game settings** > **Remote console (RCON)** |

Never use your RCON password as the server password. Anyone who knows the RCON password can control the server.

## How to set a server password

**1. Open Game settings**

Open your server and click **Game settings** under **GAME SETTINGS**.

**2. Set the password**

In the **Server** section, click **Set** next to **Server password** and type the password.

**3. Review and save**

Click **Review and save**. The password is hidden in the review. Click **Save changes**.

**4. Restart**

Click **Restart now** on the banner. From now on, the game asks players for the password when they connect.

## How to remove the password

Stop the server, open `config.json` in **Files** (or click **config.json: open the raw file** at the bottom of **Game settings**) and set the `password` key to an empty value:

Save the file and start the server. **Server password** shows "not set" again and the server is open to everyone.

## How to change the password from inside the game

If you are logged in to RCON, you can change the password while the server runs. This change is temporary: it lasts until the next restart, when the password from **Game settings** applies again ([open.mp documentation](https://open.mp/docs/server/ControllingServer)).

| `/rcon password 0` | Removes the server password |

Example: `/rcon password raceNight24`

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I hide my server from the server list?

Turn off **Show in the server list** in **Game settings**, save and restart. Players can then only join with your address. A password and a hidden listing work well together.

### Why does the password come back after a restart?

Passwords set with `/rcon password` are temporary. Set it in **Game settings** to keep it.

### Can I see the password after saving it?

The review dialog hides passwords. You can see the value in `config.json` in **Files** under the `password` key.
