# How to Edit server.cfg on Your RedM Server

> Edit your RedM server.cfg on FREAKHOSTING with the Server config page: name, language, OneSync and list details, plus a raw RedM server.cfg example explained.

`server.cfg` is the main configuration file of a RedM server: it sets the server name, OneSync, server list details and which resources start. On FREAKHOSTING, click **Server config** under **FIVEM** in the sidebar to edit it in plain words, click **Review and save**, check the changes and click **Save changes**. Restart the server to apply them.

| Difficulty | Time | Panel page | Backup of the old file |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 minutes | **Server config** | `server.cfg.bak` |

## Before you start

* RedM uses the same **Server config** page as FiveM, so some help texts mention FiveM or GTA. The fields work for RedM, except **Game build** (see the warning below).
* If you run a txAdmin recipe, txAdmin uses the `server.cfg` in the recipe's folder, not the one this page edits. See [how to set up txAdmin](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/redm/how-to-set-up-txadmin-on-redm.md).

## How to edit server.cfg with Server config

**1. Open Server config**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Server config** under **FIVEM**. Only the lines you change are touched.

![RedM Server config page with Checks showing three items to look at, the Open txAdmin button and the Your server section with Server name, Project name, Player slots, Language and Licence key](https://mintcdn.com/freakhostingltd/DHEkFogaRHlgkEmZ/images/games/redm/redm-server-config.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=DHEkFogaRHlgkEmZ\&q=85\&s=1acae989cb5fe4d97e9aa0a81134e29e)

The Server config page with its checks

**2. Fix the checks**

**Checks** lists what to look at. On a new server: **The licence key is not set**, **The language is still the template's placeholder** and **The project name is still the template's**. Click **Use English (en-US)** or **Go to the setting** to fix one.

**3. Change the fields**

Fill in the fields in the tables below.

**4. Review and save**

Click **Review and save** in the bar at the bottom. The dialog shows exactly which lines change; licence keys, passwords and other secrets are hidden in this view. Click **Save changes**. The old file is kept as `server.cfg.bak`.

**5. Restart**

Restart the server to apply the changes.

### Your server

| Field | What it sets |
| - | - |
| **Server name** | The name in the server list and the connect screen. Replace the template's placeholder name. |
| **Project name** | A short name in the server list, not a list of tags. |
| **Player slots** | `sv_maxclients`. The panel rewrites it from **Max Players** in **Startup** at every start. **Max Players** is set by your plan. |
| **Language** | The language of your players, for example **English (United Kingdom) (en-GB)**. 36 languages are listed. |
| **Licence key** | Shows **not set** until a key is in the file. Set it in **Startup**; see [licence key](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/redm/how-to-get-a-redm-license-key.md). |

### Gameplay and security

| Field | What it sets |
| - | - |
| **OneSync** | **On (recommended)**, **Legacy (old, not recommended)** or **Off (up to 32 players)**. See [OneSync](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/redm/configuring-onesync.md). |
| **Game build** | Do not use on RedM. See the warning below. |
| **Allow Script Hook** | Leave it off. Cfx.re advises against it because it makes cheating easier. |
| **Hide player IP addresses** | `sv_endpointPrivacy`. Keeps player addresses out of public reports. On by default. |

> [!WARNING]
>
> The **Game build** list on **Server config** shows GTA V builds (for example 2060 or 3889). They do not exist for Red Dead Redemption 2. Leave this field **not set** and choose the RedM build in **Startup** > **Game Build** instead. See [how to change the game build](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/redm/how-to-change-the-game-build-on-your-redm-server.md).

### Server list

| Field | What it sets |
| - | - |
| **Description** | One sentence about your server. |
| **Tags** | Separated by commas, for example `roleplay, western, english`. |
| **Banner on the connect screen** | An `https://` picture shown while players connect. |
| **Banner in the server details** | An `https://` picture on your server's page in the list. |
| **Server icon file** | A 96 × 96 PNG in the main folder (upload it in **Files**); type only its file name. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Cfx.re now manages server list details on the [Cfx.re Portal](https://portal.cfx.re/servers). Its documentation marks `sv_hostname`, `sv_projectName`, `sv_projectDesc` and `load_server_icon` in `server.cfg` as deprecated. If the list doesn't show what you set here, set it on the Portal.

## How to edit the raw server.cfg file

For lines the page doesn't cover, such as `ensure` lines, permissions or a database connection, click **Advanced: open the raw file**. It opens `server.cfg` in the file editor. See [how to use the file manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md).

## RedM server.cfg example explained

```cfg theme={null}
# Game and build (RedM)
set gamename rdr3
set onesync on
sv_endpointPrivacy true
# Server list details (also managed on the Cfx.re Portal)
sv_hostname "My RedM Server"
sets sv_projectName "Frontier Roleplay"
sets sv_projectDesc "Serious western roleplay"
sets tags "roleplay, western, english"
sets locale "en-GB"
# Database (only for frameworks and scripts that need one)
set mysql_connection_string "mysql://user:password@203.0.113.10:3306/database"
# Resources start in this order
ensure mapmanager
ensure spawnmanager
ensure redm-map-one
ensure oxmysql
# Admins
add_ace group.admin command allow
add_principal identifier.fivem:1 group.admin
```

| Line | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `set gamename rdr3` | Tells FXServer to host RedM (`gta5` is FiveM). |
| `set onesync on` | Turns OneSync on. |
| `sv_endpointPrivacy true` | Hides player IP addresses from public reports. |
| `sv_hostname`, `sv_projectName`, `sv_projectDesc` | Name, project name and description. Deprecated in favour of the Portal. |
| `sets tags`, `sets locale` | Tags and language. `sets` publishes the value in your server's public info. |
| `set mysql_connection_string` | The database login for oxmysql. See [database setup](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/redm/database-setup-mariadb.md). |
| `ensure` | Starts a resource, or restarts it if it is running. |
| `add_ace`, `add_principal` | Permissions. Replace the template's `identifier.fivem:1` with your own identifier. See [admin setup](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/redm/admin-menu-setup.md). |

Don't add `sv_maxclients`, `sv_licenseKey`, `steam_webApiKey` or `endpoint_add_*` lines by hand. The panel writes them from **Startup** at every start, in a block the file marks as set automatically. The game build is also set from **Startup**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where is server.cfg on my RedM server?

In your server's main folder. A txAdmin recipe uses the `server.cfg` in its own folder under `txData`.

### How do I undo a change to server.cfg?

The previous file is saved as `server.cfg.bak`. The file editor's **History** also keeps earlier versions you can restore.

### Do server.cfg changes apply without a restart?

No. Restart after saving. To start one new resource without a restart, run `refresh` and then `ensure <name>` in the console.

### Why does my slot number change back?

The panel rewrites `sv_maxclients` from **Max Players** at every start. **Max Players** is set by your plan; for more slots, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php).
