# Risk of Rain 2 server.cfg Explained: Every Setting

> Risk of Rain 2 server.cfg explained: where the file is, which keys the panel sets from Startup at every start, and which keys like sv_custom_tags you add.

A Risk of Rain 2 dedicated server reads its settings from `Risk of Rain 2_Data/Config/server.cfg`. On FREAKHOSTING, the panel rewrites `sv_hostname`, `sv_password`, `sv_maxplayers`, the ports and `steam_server_heartbeat_enabled` from the **Startup** page every time the server starts, so change those on **Startup**. Other settings, such as `sv_custom_tags`, `sv_allow_rule_voting` and `gamemode`, you add to the file yourself.

| Fact | Value |
| - | - |
| File | `Risk of Rain 2_Data/Config/server.cfg` |
| Edit with | **Files** ([File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md)) or [SFTP](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-connect-via-sftp.md) |
| Line format | `key value;` (text values in double quotes) |
| When changes apply | The next time the server starts |

## Which settings does the panel control?

These keys are written from **Startup** at every start. If you change them in the file, the panel puts the Startup value back.

| Key | What it does | Set it on Startup with |
| - | - | - |
| `sv_hostname` | The public name in the server browser | **Server Hostname** |
| `sv_password` | The join password; empty means none | **Server Password** |
| `steam_server_heartbeat_enabled` | `1` lists the server on the Steam master server, `0` hides it | **Advertise Server** |
| `sv_maxplayers` | The most players allowed | **Max Players** (read only, your plan's slots) |
| `sv_port` | The game port players join on | Set by the panel (your **PRIMARY** port) |
| `steam_server_query_port` | The port for Steam queries | **Query Port** (read only) |
| `steam_server_steam_port` | The port for Steam | Set by the panel |

Don't edit `sv_maxplayers` or the port keys. For more player slots, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php).

## Which settings can I add myself?

These are standard Risk of Rain 2 console variables. Add each on its own line.

| Key | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| `sv_custom_tags` | empty | Comma-separated custom tags reported to the server browser. See [server browser tags](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/risk-of-rain-2/configuring-server-browser-tags.md) |
| `sv_allow_rule_voting` | `1` | Whether players may vote on rules (such as difficulty and artifacts) in the lobby. `0` turns voting off |
| `gamemode` | `ClassicRun` | The game mode for the next run. `EclipseRun` starts Eclipse. See [Eclipse mode](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/risk-of-rain-2/playing-eclipse-mode-on-dedicated-server.md) |

## How to edit server.cfg

**1. Stop the server**

[Stop the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) so nothing changes the file while you edit it.

**2. Open the file**

Click **Files**, open the `Risk of Rain 2_Data` folder, then `Config`, and click `server.cfg`.

**3. Add your lines**

Add one setting per line, ending each line with `;`. Leave the lines the panel manages as they are.

**4. Save and start**

Save the file and start the server. Check the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md) for errors.

## Example lines you can add

```text theme={null}
sv_custom_tags "eclipse,eu,friendly";
sv_allow_rule_voting 1;
gamemode EclipseRun;
```

## Frequently asked questions

### Why did my server name in server.cfg change back?

The panel rewrites `sv_hostname` from **Server Hostname** on **Startup** at every start. Change the name on **Startup**.

### Can I raise the player limit in server.cfg?

No. `sv_maxplayers` comes from **Max Players**, which shows the slots in your plan. Risk of Rain 2 itself is made for up to four players. [Open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) for more slots.

### Is the password in server.cfg safe?

It is stored as plain text in the file, so don't reuse a password from an account.

### Which port does my Risk of Rain 2 server use?

The **PRIMARY** port on the **Network** page, for example `203.0.113.10:27015`. The panel writes it to `sv_port` for you.
