# How to Set Up the Rust+ App on Your Rust Server

> Rust+ works on FREAKHOSTING Rust servers through APP PORT 28082. Players pair from the game; set APP PORT to -1 in Startup to turn the companion app off.

Rust+ (the official Rust companion app) works on FREAKHOSTING Rust servers without extra setup: the server's companion port is **APP PORT** 28082 in **Startup**. Players pair the app with your server from inside the game, then get map, team chat and alerts on their phone. To turn Rust+ off, set **APP PORT** to `-1` and restart.

| Fact | Value |
| - | - |
| Startup variable | **APP PORT** (`APP_PORT`), default 28082 |
| Game convar | `app.port` |
| Protocol | TCP |
| Turn off | **APP PORT** = `-1` |
| Pairings stored in | `/server/rust/player.tokens.db` |

## How Rust+ connects to your server

Facepunch's [Rust+ Server](https://wiki.facepunch.com/rust/rust-companion-server) page explains:

* The companion server uses a TCP port. If none is set, the game uses the game port or RCON port (whichever is higher) plus 67, which is 28082 with the standard ports.
* The port must be 10000 or higher so the Rust+ service can reach it.
* Changes to the port need a restart.
* `app.info` in the console shows the port and connection settings the server is using.

Your server already has port 28082 assigned, so Rust+ works once the server is running.

## How players pair the app

**1. Install Rust+**

Install the Rust+ app on the phone and log in with Steam.

**2. Join your server**

Join your Rust server on PC.

**3. Pair from the game**

Open the Rust+ option in the game's menu and pair with the server.

Your server's logo (`server.logoimage`, the **Logo** field in **Server settings**) also shows in the app after pairing. See [description and header image](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/rust/configuring-server-description-and-header-image.md).

## How to check that Rust+ works

Type `app.info` in the panel [Console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md). It shows the port and IP the companion server uses. The console needs your own RCON password; see [console not working](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/rust/rust-console-not-working-waiting-for-rcon.md).

Facepunch limits connection checks to 10 per IP address every 5 minutes. If you restart many times quickly, wait 5 minutes before you try to pair again.

## How to turn Rust+ off

**1. Open Startup**

In the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), open [Startup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-configure-startup-variables.md).

**2. Set APP PORT to -1**

Change **APP PORT** to `-1`.

**3. Restart**

Restart the server.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do players have to pair again after a wipe?

The **Wipe** page deletes `player.tokens.db`, which holds the Rust+ pairings. Facepunch notes that deleting it makes players pair again.

### Can I change the Rust+ port?

**APP PORT** is editable, but it must be a port assigned to your server and 10000 or higher. If you need another port, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) and ask for an extra port.

### Does Rust+ work with Oxide or Carbon?

Rust+ is part of the game itself, not a plugin, and is set with the same **APP PORT** whichever **Plugin framework** you choose.
