# How to Set Up a Satisfactory Dedicated Server (Getting Started)

> Set up a Satisfactory dedicated server on FREAKHOSTING: start it, add it in the in-game Server Manager, claim it, set passwords and create or upload a game.

To set up a Satisfactory dedicated server on FREAKHOSTING, start the server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), then open Satisfactory, go to **Server Manager**, click **Add Server** and enter your server address with port 7777. Confirm the certificate, claim the server with a name and an admin password, then create a game or upload a save. Name, passwords and saves are managed in the game, not the panel.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Where |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 10 to 15 minutes (first start takes longer) | Every FREAKHOSTING Satisfactory server | Game Panel, then the in-game **Server Manager** |

## Before you start

* Log in to the [Game Panel](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-login-and-access-the-game-panel.md) and open your server.
* Install Satisfactory on your PC. Your game and the server must run the same version and branch.
* Find your server address on the server's **Overview** or **Network** page in the panel, for example `203.0.113.10:7777`.

## How to start your Satisfactory server for the first time

**1. Start the server**

Click **Start** and open the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md). On the first start the server downloads the game files through SteamCMD, about 1.5 GB, so it can take several minutes.

**2. Wait for the ready lines**

The server is ready when the console shows `Server API listening on '0.0.0.0:7777'` and `Server streaming socket bound to port 8888`. About 30 seconds later it shows `Server startup time elapsed and saving/level loading is done`.

**3. Ignore the harmless start-up messages**

Lines such as `Invalid schema category Lobby`, `Failed to initialize schema registry` and, on the first start, `Failed to read file '…/ServerSettings.7777.sav'` are normal. `Server API is running using a Self-Signed Certificate` is also expected; the game asks you to trust it when you first connect.

## How to claim your server in the Server Manager

**1. Add the server**

In Satisfactory, open **Server Manager** from the main menu and click **Add Server**. Enter your server's IP address and port `7777`, then confirm.

**2. Trust the certificate**

When the **Server Certificate Warning** appears, click **Confirm**. The server uses a self-signed certificate, so this prompt is normal the first time.

**3. Claim the server**

In **Claim Server**, enter a server name and click **Confirm**.

**4. Set the admin password**

In **Set Admin Password**, type the password twice. Only players with this password can load saves, create games and change server options. Keep it safe; see [admin management](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/admin-management-in-satisfactory.md).

**5. Create or upload a game**

Open **Create Game**, choose a starting location, enter a session name and start the game. To continue a world from your PC instead, open **Manage Saves** and click **Upload Save**; see [upload your save](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/how-to-upload-your-save-to-a-satisfactory-server.md).

**6. Set a player password (optional)**

Open **Server Settings** and click **Change Password** next to **Player Password Protection**. Players then need this password to join. Player password protection is off by default.

## How do players join a Satisfactory dedicated server?

Each player opens **Server Manager**, clicks **Add Server**, enters the same address and port `7777`, confirms the certificate and joins from there. Players should not use the **Join Game** option from the main menu for a dedicated server. Satisfactory has no public server list, so the address is the only way in. See [connection problems](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/satisfactory-server-connection-problems.md) if it fails.

## What can you change in the Game Panel?

The panel's **Game settings** page under **GAME SETTINGS** covers the settings that live in files and startup settings: rotating autosaves, connection timeouts, internet speed, crash reports, automatic updates and the game branch. **Player slots** is fixed at 4 by your hosting plan. See [server settings explained](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/satisfactory-server-settings-explained.md).

## Make your first backup

Once your game is running, make a [panel backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md). Satisfactory also keeps 3 rotating autosaves by default; you can raise this with **Autosaves to keep** on **Game settings**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do I set the server name and passwords?

In the game, not the panel. Use **Server Manager** > your server > **Server Settings**. The panel's **Game settings** page says the same under **More about this page**.

### Why does my first start take so long?

The first start downloads about 1.5 GB of game files. Later starts only check for updates, and the game itself starts in a few seconds.

### What port do I use to connect?

Port `7777`. The server also uses `8888` for reliable messaging, but the game handles that port itself. See [server ports](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/satisfactory-server-ports.md).

### How many players can join?

4 players at once. **Player slots** is fixed by your plan; see [max players](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/satisfactory-server-max-players.md).

### I forgot the admin password. What now?

Stop the server and delete `ServerSettings.7777.sav`, then claim the server again. See [admin management](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/satisfactory/admin-management-in-satisfactory.md) for what this resets.
