# How to Install EXILED Plugins on Your SCP: Secret Laboratory Server

> How to install EXILED plugins on an SCP: Secret Laboratory server: upload the .dll to .config/EXILED/Plugins, add dependencies, restart and edit the config.

To install an EXILED plugin on a FREAKHOSTING SCP: Secret Laboratory server, download the plugin's `.dll` file, open **Files** in the Game Panel, upload it to `.config/EXILED/Plugins/` and put any extra libraries it needs in `.config/EXILED/Plugins/dependencies/`. Restart the server. EXILED loads the plugin and creates its settings in `.config/EXILED/Configs/`.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel page |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 to 10 minutes | Every FREAKHOSTING SCP:SL server | **Files** |

## Before you start

* EXILED, a community plugin framework for SCP:SL, is installed with your server. You don't install it yourself.
* Download plugins only from a source you trust, such as the plugin's GitHub releases page.
* Check that the plugin supports your EXILED version. The version is set on **Startup**; see [update EXILED](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/scp-secret-laboratory/how-to-update-exiled-and-scp-secret-laboratory.md).
* Make a [backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md) first.

## How to install an EXILED plugin

**1. Stop the server**

[Stop the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) so files are not in use.

**2. Open the Plugins folder**

Click **Files** and open `.config/EXILED/Plugins/`. You see the plugins that come with EXILED, such as `Exiled.Events.dll` and `Exiled.Permissions.dll`. Leave these in place.

**3. Upload the plugin**

Upload the plugin's `.dll` file into this folder. If the download is a `.zip`, unzip it on your PC first and upload only the files the plugin's instructions name. Large or many files are easier over [SFTP](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-connect-via-sftp.md).

**4. Upload dependencies**

If the plugin needs extra libraries (dependencies), upload them to `.config/EXILED/Plugins/dependencies/`.

**5. Start the server**

Start the server and watch the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md). Look for errors that name your plugin while the server starts. They usually mean a missing dependency or a version mismatch.

## Where are EXILED plugin configs?

After the first start with a new plugin, EXILED writes its settings to `.config/EXILED/Configs/<port>-config.yml`, where `<port>` is your server's port. Each plugin has its own section in that file. Edit it in **Files** and restart.

Some plugins keep settings in their own files. Check the plugin's instructions.

| Folder | What goes there |
| - | - |
| `.config/EXILED/Plugins/` | Plugin `.dll` files |
| `.config/EXILED/Plugins/dependencies/` | Libraries plugins need |
| `.config/EXILED/Configs/` | Plugin settings, created by EXILED |
| `.config/SCP Secret Laboratory/LabAPI/plugins/` | LabAPI plugins |
| `.config/SCP Secret Laboratory/LabAPI/dependencies/` | Libraries for LabAPI plugins |

## What is the difference between EXILED and LabAPI plugins?

LabAPI is Northwood's official plugin loader, included with the dedicated server since version 14.1. EXILED is a community framework. A plugin is made for one of them; its download page says which. Put EXILED plugins in the EXILED folder and LabAPI plugins in the LabAPI folder, then restart.

## How to remove a plugin

Stop the server, delete the plugin's `.dll` from `.config/EXILED/Plugins/` and start the server again. You can also delete its section from the config file.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why doesn't my EXILED plugin load?

The plugin may be built for another EXILED or game version, a dependency may be missing, or the file is in the wrong folder. Read the error in the console and check the plugin's requirements.

### Do I need to restart after adding a plugin?

Yes. Plugins load when the server starts.

### Do plugins change my server's listing?

Northwood's Community Server Guidelines define "transparently modded" servers, and `config_gameplay.txt` has a `transparently_modded_server` setting to declare it. Read the guidelines if your server is, or will be, verified.

### Can I install plugins from the Game Panel without uploading?

No. There is no plugin browser for SCP:SL in the panel. Upload the files in **Files** or over SFTP.
