# How to Become Admin on Your Unturned Server

> How to make yourself admin on an Unturned server: add Owner <SteamID64> to Commands.dat while the server is stopped, or type admin <player> in the console.

To become admin on your FREAKHOSTING Unturned server, stop the server, open `Commands.dat` from **Game settings** (**Commands.dat: open the raw file**), add the line `Owner 76561198000000000` with your own SteamID64, save and start the server. The owner always has admin rights. To make another player admin while they are online, type `admin PlayerName` in the panel console.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Panel pages |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 5 minutes | Every FREAKHOSTING Unturned server | **Game settings**, **Console**, **Files** |

## Before you start

You need your **SteamID64**, a 17-digit number that starts with `7656`. In the Steam client, click your account name and open **Account details**; the number is shown under your account name. If your Steam profile has no custom address, the number is also at the end of your profile link.

## How to set yourself as the server owner

**1. Stop the server**

[Stop the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md). `Owner` is a startup command, so it only works when the server reads `Commands.dat` at start.

**2. Open Commands.dat**

Open **Game settings** and click **Commands.dat: open the raw file**. You can also open `Servers/PterodactylUnturned/Server/Commands.dat` in the [File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md).

**3. Add the Owner line**

Add a new line with `Owner` and your SteamID64, then save:

```text theme={null}
Owner 76561198000000000
```

**4. Start the server and join**

Start the server and join. You now have admin rights and can use admin commands in chat with `/`.

There is only one owner. To give admin rights to more people, use the `admin` command.

## How to make another player admin

While the server is running and the player is online, type this in the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md):

```text theme={null}
admin PlayerName
```

As an admin you can also type `/admin PlayerName` in chat. The rights are saved, so the player stays admin after a restart.

| Command | What it does | Example |
| - | - | - |
| `admin <player>` | Gives a player admin rights | `admin Nelson` |
| `unadmin <player>` | Takes admin rights away | `unadmin Nelson` |
| `admins` | Lists all admins | `admins` |
| `Owner <SteamID64>` | Sets the owner (`Commands.dat` only) | `Owner 76561198000000000` |
| `Hide_Admins` | Hides the admin label from players (`Commands.dat` only) | `Hide_Admins` |

## How to turn on cheat commands

Some game commands, such as `/give`, `/vehicle` and `/experience`, are cheat commands. They only work for admins when `Cheats` is in `Commands.dat`:

```text theme={null}
Cheats
```

Add the line while the server is stopped, then start it. RocketMod's own commands, such as `/v` and `/i`, don't need `Cheats`. See [spawning vehicles](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/unturned/spawning-vehicles.md).

## Admins and RocketMod

RocketMod is installed on our servers. Admins can use every RocketMod command. For moderators who shouldn't have full admin rights, use a RocketMod group instead and give it only the commands they need. See [RocketMod permissions](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/unturned/setting-up-permissions-in-rocketmod-unturned.md).

## Frequently asked questions

### Why doesn't my Owner line work?

The server was probably running when you saved, or the SteamID64 is wrong. Check it is 17 digits, stop the server, save `Commands.dat` again and start it.

### Can I add admins by editing a file?

The game stores admins in `Server/Adminlist.dat`, which is not a text file. Use the `admin` command instead.

### Why does @admin not work in chat?

On our servers RocketMod handles chat commands and only reacts to `/`. Type `/admin PlayerName`.

### How do I remove an admin?

Type `unadmin PlayerName` in the console. To change the owner, edit or remove the `Owner` line while the server is stopped.
