# How to Set a Steam Game Server Token (GSLT) on Unturned

> How to set a GSLT on an Unturned server: create a token for App ID 304930 on Steam, paste it into GSLT on Startup or Game settings and restart the server.

To set a Steam game server login token (GSLT) on a FREAKHOSTING Unturned server, create a token for App ID **304930** at [steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers](https://steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers), paste it into the **GSLT** variable on **Startup** (or **Steam game server login token** on **Game settings**) and restart. Our Unturned servers need a valid token: without one the server can't log on to Steam and never finishes starting.

## Why does an Unturned server need a GSLT?

A GSLT is a key from Steam that lets your server log on to Steam as an internet server. Our Unturned servers run as internet servers, so the token is required:

* With a valid token the server logs on, appears in the **Internet** server list and keeps the same Server Code after every restart.
* With no token or a wrong one the console shows `Failed to connect to Steam servers because k_EResultInvalidParam` and the panel stays on **Starting**. Nobody can join.

## How to create a GSLT for Unturned

**1. Open Steam's token page**

Go to [steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers](https://steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers) and log in with your Steam account.

**2. Enter the App ID**

Enter **304930** in the App ID field. That is Unturned's own App ID.

**3. Add a memo and create the token**

Type a memo you will recognise, such as your server name, and create the token.

**4. Copy the token**

Copy the **Login Token**. Keep it private, as anyone with it can use your server's identity.

Use one token per server. If you run two Unturned servers, create two tokens.

## How to add the token to your server

**1. Open Startup**

In the Game Panel, open your server and click **Startup**. See [startup variables](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-configure-startup-variables.md).

**2. Paste the token**

Paste the token into **GSLT**. It saves when you click outside the field.

**3. Restart the server**

[Restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) and watch the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md).

You can also set it on **Game settings**: under **Server list**, click **Change** next to **Steam game server login token**, paste it and save. It is marked **STARTUP** because both places store the same value. **Remove** clears it.

## How to check that the token works

| Console line | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `Successfully set game server login token.` | The token was passed to the server; this doesn't yet mean it is valid |
| `Steam servers ready!` | The token is valid and the server is logged on to Steam |
| `Using login token, but it does not seem to be correctly formatted` | The value isn't a real token, for example `0` or a token with missing characters |
| `Failed to connect to Steam servers because k_EResultInvalidParam` | Steam rejected the token; the server won't finish starting |

If Steam rejects the token, create a new one on the same Steam page, paste it and restart. A token that you deleted or regenerated on Steam stops working.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the GSLT free?

Yes. Any Steam account that meets Steam's requirements can create tokens on the managegameservers page.

### Which App ID do I use for Unturned?

**304930**, the App ID of Unturned. Don't use the App ID of the Unturned Dedicated Server tool.

### Why is my Unturned server stuck on Starting?

### Can I use the same token on two servers?

No. Each running server needs its own token.
