# V Rising Server Settings Not Working or Resetting: Fixes

> V Rising settings not working? The panel rewrites host settings at each start, a preset overrides your file, and ServerGameSettings.json must sit in save-data/Settings.

If a V Rising setting doesn't apply on your FREAKHOSTING server, the usual causes are: you edited a host setting the panel rewrites at every start (change it on **Startup** instead), **Game Settings Preset** is set so your own file is ignored, `ServerGameSettings.json` is in the wrong folder or has a JSON mistake, or the server wasn't restarted. Game rules belong in `save-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json`.

## Quick checks

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| Name, password or save name goes back after restart | The panel rewrites `ServerHostSettings.json` from **Startup** | Change it on the **Startup** page |
| Game rule changes are ignored | **Game Settings Preset** is set | Set **Game Settings Preset** to empty |
| Game rule changes are ignored | File in the wrong place | Use `save-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json` |
| Changes lost after an update | You edited `VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/` | Copy your values to `save-data/Settings/` |
| Server won't start after an edit | JSON mistake | Fix the file or remove your change |
| Nothing changed | No restart | Restart the server |

## Why do my host settings reset after a restart?

Every time the server starts, the panel writes your **Startup** variables into `save-data/Settings/ServerHostSettings.json`. Values you typed into that file for name, description, password, ports, player and admin slots, save name, autosaves, listing, preset, FPS, secure mode, debug events, API and RCON are replaced. Change them on the **Startup** page. The full list is in [server settings explained](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/v-rising/v-rising-server-settings-explained.md).

## How to make your game settings file work

**1. Check the location**

In the [File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md), the file must be exactly `save-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json`. Capital letters matter.

**2. Empty the preset**

On **Startup**, set **Game Settings Preset** to empty. Any preset loads its own rules instead of your file.

**3. Check the JSON**

Every key and text value is in double quotes, numbers use a dot (`1.5`), lines inside a block end with a comma except the last, and every `{` has a matching `}`. Paste the file into a JSON checker if you aren't sure.

**4. Check the key name**

Key names must match exactly, for example `TeleportBoundItems` or `ClanSize`. Keys from old guides that the game doesn't know, such as `ServantMissionTimeModifier`, do nothing.

**5. Restart**

[Restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) and watch the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md) until `Startup Completed`.

## Why does a change not affect my existing world?

The panel notes that some settings may not apply after the save file is first created. If a rule still doesn't change after the checks above, test it on a new world: set a new **Save Name** on **Startup**, restart and check. Switch back to your old **Save Name** afterwards. See [reset the world](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/v-rising/resetting-map-chunks.md).

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I edit the files in VRisingServer\_Data/StreamingAssets?

No. They hold the official defaults and game updates can replace them. Copy what you need into `save-data/Settings/` instead.

### My server won't start after I edited ServerGameSettings.json. What now?

Open the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md) and look for an error about the file. Fix the JSON, or rename your file so the server uses the defaults, then start again.

### Where do I change the clan size?

In `save-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json` with the `ClanSize` key. See [clan size](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/v-rising/managing-clans-and-group-limits.md).
