# How to Install a Valheim Modpack on Your Server

> Valheim modpack server: install the pack on the Mods page, or set the ModPack Startup variable to its Thunderstore dependency string and reinstall.

To install a Valheim modpack on a FREAKHOSTING server, search for it on the **Mods** page, click **Install** (the pack's mods come as its dependencies) and restart. The other way is the **ModPack** Startup variable: enter the pack's Thunderstore dependency string and reinstall the server, because changing it requires a reinstall. Every player then installs the same pack and version.

| Method | Best for | Needs reinstall |
| - | - | - |
| **Mods** page | Most packs; easy to update or switch mods off | No, a restart |
| **ModPack** Startup variable | Packs that should install automatically on reinstall | Yes |

## Method 1: install a modpack from the Mods page

**1. Back up first**

Make a [backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md). A modpack adds many mods at once.

**2. Find the pack**

Open **Mods** under **VALHEIM** and search for the pack's name in **Search Valheim mods**. If it isn't listed, use Method 2.

**3. Install**

Click **Install**. The dialog lists every mod in the pack as a dependency. Click **Install**.

**4. Restart**

Click **Done** and [restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md).

## Method 2: the ModPack Startup variable

The panel describes **ModPack** as: "Enter the Dependency String name for a ModPack to automatically be installed. NOTE: If the modpack Updates, you will need to update this variable with the new Dependency String... CHANGING THIS REQUIRES A SERVER REINSTALL".

**1. Copy the dependency string**

On the pack's Thunderstore page, copy its dependency string. It has the form `Author-PackName-1.2.3`.

**2. Set the variable**

Open **Startup** and paste the string into **ModPack**. See [startup variables](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-configure-startup-variables.md).

**3. Back up and reinstall**

Make a [backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md), then [reinstall the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-manage-server-settings-and-reinstall.md).

**4. Start and check**

Start the server and check the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md) for loaded mods.

> When the pack updates, the variable doesn't follow. Enter the new dependency string and reinstall again.

## How players install the same modpack

Players need the same pack and version on their PC:

1. Install a Thunderstore mod manager such as r2modman.
2. Search for the same modpack and install the same version into a profile.
3. Start Valheim from the mod manager and join the server.

If you built your own mod list instead, r2modman can export a profile as a code or file that friends import.

Console players can't use mods, so a modpack that players need doesn't work for them on a [crossplay](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/valheim/setting-up-valheim-crossplay-xbox-pc.md) server.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a Thunderstore dependency string?

The pack's ID and version, like `Author-PackName-1.2.3`. It is shown on the pack's Thunderstore page.

### Will reinstalling delete my world?

Make a backup first, always. Check [server settings and reinstall](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-manage-server-settings-and-reinstall.md) for what a reinstall keeps.

### How do I remove a modpack?

Switch off or delete its mods on **Mods** and restart. If you used the variable, clear **ModPack** as well.
