# How to Whitelist Players on Your Valheim Server (permittedlist)

> Valheim whitelist: add SteamID64s on the Allowed tab of Admins and bans. Once the list has entries, only those players can join (permittedlist.txt).

To whitelist players on your Valheim server, open **Admins and bans** under **VALHEIM** in the Game Panel, click the **Allowed** tab, add each player's 17-digit SteamID64 and click **Review and save**. As soon as the list has entries, only those players can join; everyone else is kept out, even with the password. The panel writes Valheim's `permittedlist.txt` for you. Leave the list empty to let anybody with the password in.

| Fact | Value |
| - | - |
| Panel page | **Admins and bans** > **Allowed** |
| File | `permittedlist.txt` |
| Player ID | SteamID64, 17 digits |
| Empty list | Everybody with the password can join |

## How to whitelist players

**1. Collect SteamID64s**

Look up each player at [steamid.io](https://steamid.io) and copy the 17-digit number. Include yourself.

**2. Open the Allowed tab**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com), click **Admins and bans** under **VALHEIM** and choose **Allowed**.

**3. Add each player**

Enter the **SteamID64**, an optional **Note** and click **+ Add**. Repeat for every player.

**4. Review and save**

Click **Review and save**. The server notices the change while it runs, usually within a minute. [Restart](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) to make sure.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Add yourself before you save. Once the **Allowed** list has entries, anyone not on it can't join, including you.

## How to remove the whitelist

Delete every entry on the **Allowed** tab and click **Review and save**. When the list is empty ("The list is empty, so everybody with the password can join."), the server is open to anyone with the password again.

## Whitelist, password and bans compared

| Tool | Who gets in |
| - | - |
| **Password** | Anyone who knows it |
| **Allowed** (whitelist) | Only listed players, and they still need the password |
| **Banned** | Everyone except the listed players |

## Frequently asked questions

### Do whitelisted players still need the password?

Yes. The whitelist is checked as well as the password.

### Can I whitelist Xbox or console players?

The panel takes SteamID64s. For players on other platforms, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php) with the ID shown in their game's **F2** panel.

### Why can't a whitelisted friend join?

Check that you entered their 17-digit SteamID64, not their name or a short ID, and that you saved. Wait a minute or restart the server.
