# Valheim Server Password Not Working: Incorrect Password Fixes

> Valheim server password not working? It needs 5+ characters, can't be part of the world or server name, and must be typed exactly. Fixes inside.

If your Valheim server password isn't working, check the rules first: it must be at least 5 characters and must not be part of the world name; Valheim also rejects a password that is part of the server name. Players must type it exactly as saved. Change it in **Valheim settings** under **VALHEIM** in the Game Panel, click **Review and save** and restart the server.

## Valheim password rules

| Rule | Example that fails | Example that works |

**Valheim settings** checks the world name and length for you before you save. Keep the password different from the server name as well.

## How to change your Valheim server password

**1. Open Valheim settings**

Open your server in the [Game Panel](https://games.freakhosting.com) and click **Valheim settings** under **VALHEIM**.

**2. Enter a new password**

Type the new **Password**. Click the eye icon to check what you typed.

**3. Review and save**

Click **Review and save**. If the **Will it start?** card shows a problem with the password, fix it first.

**4. Restart the server**

[Restart the server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-start-stop-and-restart-your-game-server.md) so it uses the new password.

## Fixes for "incorrect password"

1. **Type it exactly.** Retype the password by hand instead of pasting it, so no extra space is copied, and match any capitals.
2. **Restart after a change.** The server only uses a new password after a restart.
3. **Check the server you are joining.** Compare the address with the **Join IP** in the panel.
4. **Check the whitelist.** If the **Allowed** tab on **Admins and bans** has entries, only those players can join, even with the right password. See [whitelist players](https://help.freakhosting.com/games/valheim/how-to-whitelist-players-on-valheim.md).
5. **Check bans.** Players on the **Banned** tab can't join.

### Can I run a Valheim server without a password?

Keep a password. The panel's **Will it start?** card shows what the server needs before it can start.

### Why won't my server start after I changed the password?

The password probably breaks a rule, such as being shorter than 5 characters or part of the world or server name. Check the **Will it start?** card and the [console](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/game-panel/how-to-use-the-server-console.md).

### Does crossplay change how the password works?
