# How to Configure Wards & PvP Settings in Valheim

> Configure Ward protection zones and PvP on your Valheim server to prevent griefing, control structure damage, and manage player-versus-player combat rules.

## Base Protection: Wards

> A **Ward** is a magical structure that extends a defensive field over your base. It is the primary method for protecting your chests, doors, and structures on a public or semi-private dedicated server.

## Using Wards Effectively

* **Permissions:** Only players who have "Accepted" the ward can open doors or build/dismantle items within its radius.
* **Chests:** Standard chests are locked by the ward. However, the **Personal Chest** (Iron) is always private, regardless of ward status.
* **Physical Damage:** **CRITICAL:** Wards do NOT prevent players from physically attacking your walls with weapons/axes. If a player is determined, they can still break into your base. For total invulnerability, the **WardIsLove** mod is required.

## Consensual PvP Mechanics

PvP in Valheim is strictly "Opt-In" by default.

1. **The Toggle:** Open your inventory (Tab) and locate the **Crossed Swords** icon in the top-right corner.
2. **Engagement:** You can only deal damage to another player if **BOTH** you and the target have your PvP flags enabled (Swords Up).
3. **Safety:** If a player has their PvP flag disabled (Swords Down), they are immune to damage from all other players.
