# How to Connect AI Tools to Your Firewall (MCP)

> Connect Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Codex or Gemini to your firewall so you can check attacks and manage filters by chatting.

You can connect an AI assistant to your firewall. Then you can ask questions in plain words, such as "Was my game server attacked today?" or "Block this IP address on all my servers". The assistant answers using live data from your account.

This works through **MCP** (Model Context Protocol). MCP is a standard way for AI tools to connect to other services.

## Before you start

* An AI tool that supports MCP, such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI.
* An **API key** for the assistant to use. Create a separate key just for the AI tool. See [How to create and manage API keys](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-manage-api-keys.md).

> [!WARNING]
>
> The assistant can do anything its API key allows. To start, give the key **view** permissions only. Then the assistant can read your data but can't change anything. Add `create`, `update` or `delete` permissions only when you trust it to make changes. See the [permissions reference](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-manage-api-keys.md#permissions-reference).

## Find your connection details

**1. Open the MCP page**

Go to [network.freakhosting.com/mcp](https://network.freakhosting.com/mcp).

**2. Copy the server URL**

In the **Connect** section, copy the URL with the copy button. It is `https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp`.

**3. Pick your AI tool**

Click the tab for your tool to see setup instructions you can copy.

The MCP connection page

| Setting | Value |
| - | - |
| **Server URL** | `https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp` |
| **Transport** | Streamable HTTP |
| **Header** | `Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY` |

## Set up your AI tool

In each example, replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your key.

**Claude Code**

Run this in a terminal:

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add --transport http firewall https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
```

**Codex CLI**

Add this to `~/.codex/config.toml`:

```toml theme={null}
[mcp_servers.firewall]
url = "https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp"
http_headers = { Authorization = "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
```

**Gemini CLI**

Run this in a terminal:

```bash theme={null}
gemini mcp add --transport http firewall https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
```

**Cursor**

Add this to your Cursor MCP settings file (`mcp.json`):

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "firewall": {
      "url": "https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

**VS Code**

Add this to your VS Code MCP settings (`.vscode/mcp.json`):

```json theme={null}
{
  "servers": {
    "firewall": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

**Claude Desktop**

Claude Desktop connects through the `mcp-remote` helper, which needs [Node.js](https://nodejs.org) installed. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config** and add:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "firewall": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp",
        "--header",
        "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Save the file and restart Claude Desktop. If this doesn't connect, copy the exact config from the **Claude Desktop** tab on the [MCP page](https://network.freakhosting.com/mcp).

> [!TIP]
>
> The **curl** tab on the MCP page has a command you can run to test the connection without an AI tool.

## Try it out

Once connected, ask your assistant something like:

* "List my protected IP addresses."
* "Show me the attacks on my servers in the last 24 hours."
* "Which firewall filters are on my game server's IP address?"
* "Add 203.0.113.45 to my block list." (needs `ipListEntry` → `create`)
* "Apply the Minecraft Java profile to my server's IP address." (needs `filterProfile` → `apply`)

Most AI tools ask you to approve each action before it runs. Read what the assistant plans to do before you approve changes.

## Available tools

The **Tools** section of the MCP page lists all 45 tools the assistant can use. Each tool shows its arguments and the permission it needs. Use the search box to find a tool or permission.

| Tool | What it does | Permission needed |
| - | - | - |
| `ips_list`, `ip_get` | List your IP addresses or see one. | `ip` → view |
| `attacks_list`, `attack_get` | List attacks or see one in detail. | `attackLog` → view |
| `ip_filters_list` | List the filters on an IP address. | `firewall` → view |
| `ip_filter_apply` | Add a filter, for one port, a port range or any port. | `firewall` → create |
| `ip_filter_remove` | Remove a filter. | `firewall` → delete |
| `filter_profiles_list` | List the filter presets. | `filterProfile` → view |
| `ip_profile_apply` | Apply a preset to an IP address. | `filterProfile` → apply |
| `ip_settings_get`, `ip_settings_update` | Read or change IP settings. | `ipSettings` → view / update |
| `ip_cache_get`, `ip_cache_apply`, `ip_cache_remove` | Manage query caching. | `cache` → view / create / delete |
| `ip_list_*`, `ip_list_entry_add`, `ip_list_entry_remove` | Manage IP lists and their entries. | `ipList`, `ipListEntry` |
| `activity_logs_list` | Read the activity log. | `activityLog` → view |
| `notification_create`, `notification_test` and similar | Manage alerts. | `notification` |
| `api_keys_list`, `api_key_create` | Manage API keys. A new key can't have more permissions than the key the assistant uses. | `apiKey` |
| `members_list`, `roles_list`, `invitation_create` | Manage your team. | `member`, `ac`, `invitation` |
| `organization_get`, `ddos_filters_list`, `ddos_providers_list` | Basic account and reference information. | Any valid key |

If the assistant says a tool failed because of permissions, give it a key with that permission. See the [permissions reference](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-manage-api-keys.md#permissions-reference).

## Troubleshooting

> **The AI tool can't connect**
>
> * Check the URL is exactly `https://network.freakhosting.com/api/remote/mcp`.
> * Check the header is `Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY`, with your real key.
> * Restart the AI tool after you change its settings.
> * Make sure the key hasn't been revoked on the [API keys page](https://network.freakhosting.com/api-keys).

> **The assistant says it doesn't have permission**
>
> The key doesn't include the permission that tool needs. Find the tool on the [MCP page](https://network.freakhosting.com/mcp) to see the permission. Then create a new key that includes it.

> **How do I disconnect the AI tool?**
>
> Revoke its API key on the [API keys page](https://network.freakhosting.com/api-keys). The tool loses access straight away. You can also remove the server from the tool's settings.
