# How to Create and Manage IP Lists (Whitelists and Blacklists)

> Group trusted or unwanted IP addresses and ranges into lists, then use them in your DDoS filters on the FREAKHOSTING Firewall Panel.

An **IP list** is a named group of IP addresses and ranges. Each entry is marked as **Whitelist** (trusted) or **Blacklist** (blocked). You can then attach the list to a [DDoS filter](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-apply-ddos-filters.md#use-an-ip-list), so that filter treats those addresses differently.

> [!NOTE]
>
> IP lists work with IP addresses protected by **DataForest**. IP addresses protected by CosmicGuard or SkyPass don't support IP lists. See [which provider protects your IP](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/understanding-ddos-protection-providers.md#what-each-provider-supports).

***

## When to use an IP list

* **Trust your own addresses**, such as your office, home connection or another server you own.
* **Block troublemakers**, such as addresses that keep attacking or abusing your server.
* **Reuse the same addresses** across several filters or IP addresses, so you only update them in one place.

Lists belong to your organisation, so everyone on your [team](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-manage-team-members-and-roles.md) can use them.

## View your IP lists

In the sidebar, click [IP lists](https://network.freakhosting.com/ip-lists).

The IP lists page

| Item | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Total lists** | How many lists your organisation has. |
| **Total entries** | How many addresses and ranges are in all your lists. |
| **Name** | The list name, with its description underneath. |
| **Provider** | The DDoS provider the list is for. |
| **Entries** | How many addresses and ranges are in the list. |

Use the **All providers** drop-down and the search box to find a list by name or description.

***

## Create an IP list

**1. Click New list**

On the [IP lists](https://network.freakhosting.com/ip-lists) page, click **+ New list**.

**2. Fill in the details**

* **Name**: a clear name, such as `Trusted servers`.
* **Description** (optional): a note for your team, such as `Office and VPN IPs`.
* **DDoS provider**: choose the provider that protects the IP addresses you'll use the list with (currently **DataForest**).

![New IP list dialog with Name, Description and DDoS provider fields and Cancel and Save buttons](https://mintcdn.com/freakhostingltd/0pHRhrSyr8uIxHTc/images/firewall/ip-list-new.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=0pHRhrSyr8uIxHTc\&q=85\&s=9e55311504da2ae212440aca34697d67)

Creating a new IP list

**3. Save**

Click **Save**. The new list appears in the table with 0 entries.

***

## Add addresses to a list

**1. Open the list**

Click **Open** at the end of the list's row.

**2. Click Add entry**

At the top right, click **+ Add entry**.

**3. Enter the address or range**

* **CIDR**: a single IP such as `198.51.100.7`, or a range such as `192.168.1.0/24`.
* **Action**: **Whitelist** to trust it, or **Blacklist** to block it.
* **Description** (optional): a note such as `Office network`.

![Add entry dialog with CIDR, Action (Whitelist or Blacklist) and Description fields and Cancel and Add entry buttons](https://mintcdn.com/freakhostingltd/0pHRhrSyr8uIxHTc/images/firewall/ip-list-add-entry.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=0pHRhrSyr8uIxHTc\&q=85\&s=410db405d545884cd6197c4c65a528c6)

Adding an entry to a list

**4. Add it**

Click **Add entry**. The entry appears in the list with its badge, description and the date it was added.

> [!TIP]
>
> **What's CIDR?** It's a short way to write a range of addresses. `/32` is one address, `/24` is 256 addresses (for example `203.0.113.0` to `203.0.113.255`). If you only need one address, just type the address on its own.

## Understand the list page

A list with one whitelisted range

| Section | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Entries** | Every address and range in the list, with its **Whitelist** or **Blacklist** badge, description and date added. |
| **Details** | How many entries are whitelisted and blacklisted, the provider and the date the list was created. |

***

## Use a list in a filter

**1. Open your IP**

Go to [My IP addresses](https://network.freakhosting.com/network) and click **Manage** next to the IP.

**2. Add a single filter**

Click **+ Add filters**, open the **Single filter** tab and choose the protocol, filter and port.

**3. Pick your list**

Under **IP list (optional)**, pick your list, then click **Add filter**.

The list name then appears in the **Source/IP list** column of the filter. See [Apply DDoS filters](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-apply-ddos-filters.md#use-an-ip-list) for the full steps.

***

## Remove an address from a list

**1. Open the list**

On the [IP lists](https://network.freakhosting.com/ip-lists) page, click **Open** next to the list.

**2. Click the bin icon**

Click the bin icon next to the entry.

**3. Confirm**

Click **Remove entry**. The address or range is no longer matched by the list.

***

## Rename or edit a list

**1. Click Edit**

On the [IP lists](https://network.freakhosting.com/ip-lists) page, click **Edit** next to the list.

**2. Change the details**

Update the **Name**, **Description** or **DDoS provider**, then click **Save**.

***

## Delete a list

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting a list removes the list and **all its entries**. This can't be undone.

**1. Click Delete**

On the [IP lists](https://network.freakhosting.com/ip-lists) page, click **Delete** next to the list.

**2. Type the list name**

Type the list's exact name in the box to confirm.

![Delete IP list dialog warning that the list and all its entries are removed and cannot be undone, asking you to type the list name](https://mintcdn.com/freakhostingltd/0pHRhrSyr8uIxHTc/images/firewall/ip-list-delete.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=0pHRhrSyr8uIxHTc\&q=85\&s=c025b87d0cd577f4b3e3f973bf7514cf)

Confirming a list deletion

**3. Delete it**

Click **Delete list**.

> [!TIP]
>
> Before you delete a list, check whether any filters use it. Open each IP with **Manage** and look at the **Source/IP list** column.

***

## Troubleshooting

> **My list doesn't appear when adding a filter**
>
> Make sure the list's **DDoS provider** matches the provider protecting the IP. You can change it with **Edit**.

> **The entry was rejected**
>
> Check the format. Use a single IP such as `198.51.100.7` or a range such as `198.51.100.0/24`, with no spaces.

> **A whitelisted address is still being blocked**
>
> The list only takes effect on filters that use it. Check that the filter on the right port has your list in the **Source/IP list** column. Also check your [country and ASN blocking](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/firewall/how-to-configure-ip-settings.md).
