# How to Find My Server IP Address on Linux and Windows

> How to find your server IP address on Linux and Windows: run ip -br addr or hostname -I on Linux, ipconfig or Get-NetIPAddress on Windows, or check the panel.

To find your server's IP address on Linux, run `ip -br addr` (or `hostname -I` for just the addresses). On Windows Server, run `ipconfig` in PowerShell or Command Prompt, or `Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv4`. On a FREAKHOSTING VPS you can also see every assigned IPv4 and IPv6 address on the **Network** tab of the VPS Panel, without logging in to the server.

| Difficulty | Time | Works on | Needs |
| - | - | - | - |
| Beginner | 2 minutes | All Linux distributions, Windows Server 2019/2022/2025 | Console, SSH or Remote Desktop access, or the VPS Panel |

## Before you start

* An **IP address** is your server's number on the internet. **IPv4** looks like `203.0.113.10`; **IPv6** looks like `2001:db8::10`.
* If you can't log in yet, use the panel: see [find your VPS's IP address and network settings](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/vps-panel/how-to-view-and-manage-network-settings.md). For a dedicated server you can't log in to, [open a ticket](https://freakhosting.com/clientarea/submitticket.php).

## How to find your IP address on Linux

**1. List addresses**

```bash theme={null}
ip -br addr
```

```text theme={null}
lo               UNKNOWN        127.0.0.1/8 ::1/128
eth0             UP             203.0.113.10/24 2001:db8::10/64 fe80::5054:ff:fe12:3456/64
```

Each line is a network interface. The public one is usually `eth0`, `ens3` or `enp1s0`. The number after `/` is the prefix length (network size).

**2. Show only the addresses**

```bash theme={null}
hostname -I
```

This prints every address except loopback, separated by spaces.

**3. Show IPv4 or IPv6 only**

```bash theme={null}
ip -4 addr show scope global
ip -6 addr show scope global
```

`scope global` hides `127.0.0.1` and link-local `fe80::` addresses, which aren't reachable from the internet.

### How to find the default gateway and DNS servers

```bash theme={null}
ip route show default
ip -6 route show default
```

```text theme={null}
default via 203.0.113.1 dev eth0 proto static
```

`203.0.113.1` is the gateway: the router your server sends internet traffic through. To see which DNS servers the server uses, run `resolvectl status` on Ubuntu, or `cat /etc/resolv.conf` on other distributions. See [change DNS resolvers on Linux](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/other/how-to-change-dns-resolvers-on-linux.md).

## How to find your IP address on Windows Server

> [tab] PowerShell
>
> ```powershell theme={null}
> Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv4 | Format-Table InterfaceAlias, IPAddress, PrefixLength
> Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv6 | Format-Table InterfaceAlias, IPAddress, PrefixLength
> ```
>
> For a summary with gateway and DNS servers:
>
> ```powershell theme={null}
> Get-NetIPConfiguration
> ```

> [tab] Command Prompt
>
> ```powershell theme={null}
> ipconfig
> ```
>
> For the full configuration including MAC address, DNS servers and DHCP status:
>
> ```powershell theme={null}
> ipconfig /all
> ```
>
> Look for **IPv4 Address**, **IPv6 Address** and **Default Gateway** under your Ethernet adapter.

## Public or private address?

| Address starts with | Type | Reachable from the internet? |
| - | - | - |
| `10.`, `172.16.`–`172.31.`, `192.168.` | Private IPv4 | No |
| `127.` | Loopback (the server itself) | No |
| `169.254.` | Link-local, no address was assigned | No |
| `fe80::` | IPv6 link-local | No |
| Any other IPv4 | Public IPv4 | Yes |
| `2000::/3` (starts with `2` or `3`) | Global IPv6 | Yes |

If the only address you see is private or starts with `169.254.`, the server either sits behind NAT or failed to get its network settings. Compare with the address shown in the VPS Panel, and if they differ, check the server's network configuration (see [set a static IP with Netplan](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/other/how-to-configure-a-static-ip-with-netplan.md)).

> [!NOTE]
>
> Docker, VPNs and other software add their own interfaces with private addresses, for example `docker0` with `172.17.0.1`. These are normal and are not your public IP.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does `hostname -I` show several addresses?

It lists every address on every interface: your public IPv4, IPv6, and private addresses from Docker or a VPN. Use `ip -br addr` to see which interface each belongs to.

### How do I find my IPv6 address?

Run `ip -6 addr show scope global` on Linux or `Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv6` on Windows. If nothing global appears, IPv6 isn't configured: see [configure IPv6 on Linux](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/other/how-to-configure-ipv6-on-linux.md) or [enable IPv6 on Windows Server](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/other/how-to-enable-ipv6-on-windows-server.md).

### Is `ifconfig` still available?

`ifconfig` comes from the old `net-tools` package, which many current distributions no longer install. Use `ip addr`, which is part of `iproute2` and installed by default.

### How do I find the IP address of my own computer, to allow it in a firewall?

Your home public IP is the address your router uses on the internet, not the `192.168.x.x` address on your PC. Your router's status page shows it.
