# How to Manage WordPress With the WordPress Toolkit

> Use the WordPress Toolkit in the FREAKHOSTING web hosting panel to update WordPress, turn on maintenance mode, install plugins and themes, manage users, sign in without a password and turn on debugging.

The **WordPress Toolkit** lets you look after a WordPress site without signing in to WordPress: updates, maintenance mode, plugins, themes, users and debugging are all in one place.

## Open the Toolkit

Go to [Websites](https://web.freakhosting.com/websites), click your website, open **Apps**, then click **Toolkit** on your WordPress card. The sections are listed on the left. **Admin** at the top right signs you in to the WordPress dashboard.

## General settings

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Site URL** | The address WordPress uses for your site. Click the pencil to change it, for example when moving from a temporary address to your real domain. |
| **File path** | The folder WordPress is installed in. Click the copy icon to copy it. |
| **WordPress version** | Shows your version and whether updates are waiting (*All up to date* when there are none). |
| **Maintenance mode** | Shows visitors a "briefly unavailable" page while you work. You'll see *'Maintenance mode' enabled* or *disabled*. |

### Choose how WordPress updates itself

Click the pencil next to the update schedule and pick:

* **Update only to minor versions** (recommended): security and bug-fix updates only.
* **Always update to the latest available version**: includes major new versions too.

## Plugins

The **Plugins** section lists your plugins. For each one you can **Activate** or **Deactivate** it, **Delete** it, or **Enable auto-updates**.

Your plugins

To add a plugin:

**1. Click Install**

A window opens with the WordPress plugin directory.

**2. Find the plugin**

Search by name, or browse **Featured** and **Popular**. To install a plugin file from another website, use **Install from custom URL**.

Installing a plugin

**3. Select and install**

Tick one or more plugins and click **Install**. You'll see *Plugins successfully installed*. Activate them from the list.

> [!TIP]
>
> New WordPress installs come with **LiteSpeed Cache**, which speeds up your site on our servers. Keep it active. See [speeding up your website](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/web-panel/how-to-optimize-website-performance.md).

## Themes

The **Themes** section works the same way: **Install** a new theme, **Activate** the one you want, **Delete** themes you don't use, and **Enable auto-updates**.

## Users, sign-in and debugging

Users, Single sign on and Debug

### Manage users

Click **Add user** and enter a username, email address and password. Click **⋮** on a user to **Edit** them, **Change password** or **Delete** them. This is the quickest way back in if you've forgotten your WordPress password.

### Sign in without a password

Under **Single sign on**, pick which WordPress account the **Admin** button signs you in as.

### Turn on debugging

If your site shows errors or a blank page, the **Debug** switches help you find the cause:

| Switch | What it does |
| - | - |
| **WP\_DEBUG** | Turns on WordPress debug mode. |
| **WP\_DEBUG\_LOG** | Saves errors to `wp-content/debug.log`, which you can open in the [File Manager](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/web-panel/how-to-use-the-file-manager.md). |
| **WP\_DEBUG\_DISPLAY** | Shows errors on your web pages. |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Turn debugging off when you're done. **WP\_DEBUG\_DISPLAY** shows error details to every visitor.

## Remove WordPress

**Delete** at the bottom of the Toolkit removes the WordPress install. Take a [backup](https://help.freakhosting.com/portals/web-panel/how-to-create-and-restore-backups.md) first if you might need it.

## Troubleshooting

> **My site is stuck on the maintenance page**
>
> Turn off **Maintenance mode** in the **General** section.

> **A plugin broke my site**
>
> Open **Plugins** and click **Deactivate** on the plugin you added or updated last. If you can't tell which one, turn on **WP\_DEBUG\_LOG** and check `wp-content/debug.log`.

> **I forgot my WordPress password**
>
> Click **Admin** to sign in without it, or use **⋮ → Change password** in the **Users** section.
