If your Counter-Strike: Source server isn’t showing in the server browser, first check that it has finished starting: the console must show VAC secure mode is activated. Then make sure LAN only is off in Game settings and add a Steam game server token (GSLT); without one, the panel warns that the server may be hard to find. You can always join with connect 203.0.113.10:27015 or add it to Favorites.

How to make your CS:S server show in the list

Wait until it is ready

Every start runs a game update check first, then the server boots in about 30 seconds. Watch the console. One or two Could not establish connection to Steam servers. lines are normal before Connection to Steam servers successful. The server is ready at VAC secure mode is activated.

Turn LAN only off

In Game settings, check that LAN only is off. With it on, the server isn’t listed on the internet and players on the internet can’t join.

Add a Steam token

Set Steam game server token with a GSLT for App ID 240. Without one, the server uses an anonymous Steam account with a new ID at every start. See GSLT.

Check the region

Region is Worldwide by default. If you picked a region, players filtering by another region won’t see you.

Restart and search

Restart, wait a few minutes, then open Find Servers > Internet in game and filter by your server name.

How to join without the server list

You don’t need the list to play:
  • Console: open the console (~) and type connect 203.0.113.10:27015, with the address from the panel.
  • Favorites: in Find Servers > Favorites, click Add a server and enter the address. Your server then shows there every time.
  • Steam: in the Steam client, open View > Game Servers > Favorites and add the address.

Is “Server is hibernating” a problem?

No. An empty CS:S server hibernates to save resources and wakes up when someone connects. It still answers server browser queries.

How long does it take for a CS:S server to show in the list?

Usually a few minutes after VAC secure mode is activated. If it still isn’t there, join by address; the listing doesn’t affect who can join.

Why can my friends join by IP but not find the server in the list?

The server browser may not have refreshed, they may be filtering (for example by region, map or “not full”), or LAN only is on. Clear their filters and search the exact name.

Do I need a GSLT for my CS:S server to be listed?

The server also runs without one, but the panel notes that it may be hard to find. A token gives it a fixed Steam identity. It takes five minutes to set up.

My server has a password. Is it hidden?

No. Passworded servers are still listed, with a lock icon.
