When CS2 plugins stop working after a game update, the usual cause is game/csgo/gameinfo.gi. Each CS2 update replaces this file and removes the line that loads Metamod:Source, so Metamod, CounterStrikeSharp and every plugin switch off. To fix it on a FREAKHOSTING server, open Frameworks, click Repair gameinfo.gi and restart the server.

Why does a CS2 update break plugins?

Metamod:Source loads through a line in the SearchPaths section of game/csgo/gameinfo.gi:
Valve ships a fresh gameinfo.gi with every CS2 update, so the line disappears. Your plugin files are still there, but nothing loads them. The Metamod:Source installation guide confirms you need to add the line again after each update. Your server checks for CS2 updates each time it starts (unless Disable Updates is set to 1 in Startup), so this can happen after any restart.

How to repair gameinfo.gi

1

Open Frameworks

Open your server in the Game Panel and click Frameworks under COUNTER-STRIKE 2 in the sidebar.
Frameworks page with cards for SwiftlyS2, CounterStrikeSharp, Metamod:Source and a gameinfo.gi card with its status and a Repair gameinfo.gi button

The gameinfo.gi card on the Frameworks page

2

Check the gameinfo.gi card

The card explains: “A game update resets this file and switches the frameworks off. Repair puts the lines back.” The Checks box also lists problems the panel finds.
3

Click Repair gameinfo.gi

The panel puts the lines back. Only one change runs at a time; if you see Another change is running. Wait for it to finish., wait a moment and try again.
4

Restart the server

Restart so the game reads the repaired file.
5

Check it worked

Type meta list in the Console. Metamod should answer with its plugins, including CounterStrikeSharp if you use it. Then type css_plugins list to see your CounterStrikeSharp plugins.

Plugins still fail after the repair?

A big CS2 update can also break a framework or plugin until its developers release a fix.
  • Update the framework: click Reinstall on the CounterStrikeSharp, Metamod:Source or SwiftlyS2 card, then restart. It downloads the version the panel offers.
  • Update your plugins: check each plugin’s release page for a version made for the new CS2 update.
  • Find the broken plugin: turn plugins off one at a time on the Plugins page, restarting each time.
  • Read the console: errors while the server starts usually name the plugin. You can also read the server logs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to repair gameinfo.gi after every update?

Yes, whenever an update replaces the file. Check the Frameworks page after CS2 updates.

Can I stop CS2 from updating?

You can set Disable Updates to 1 in Startup, but players with the new game version may then be unable to join. We recommend leaving updates on and repairing gameinfo.gi instead.

Can I edit gameinfo.gi myself?

Yes, with Files, but Repair gameinfo.gi does it for you. The panel’s installer keeps your previous file as gameinfo.gi.bak.

Does this affect SwiftlyS2?

The card says the update “switches the frameworks off”, so check the Frameworks page for any framework. Repair, then restart.
