If you can’t connect to your Terraria server, check four things in order: the Console shows Server started; you join with Multiplayer > Join via IP using the server’s IP and port (7777 by default); your game runs the same Terraria version as the server; and your character matches the world (Journey characters for Journey worlds only). Then check the password and the ban list.

Quick checks

Fixes by symptom

The connection times out

  1. Open the Console. If you don’t see Server started, the server is still starting or has stopped. A new world takes about a minute to generate.
  2. Use Join via IP and type the IP and the port separately. Don’t add http:// or a slash.
  3. If you changed the port in serverconfig.txt, it won’t match the port the panel gives you. Use the port shown in the panel.
  4. If you use the FREAKHOSTING firewall, check your filters: see DDoS filters.

”You are not using the same version as this server.”

Your game and the server run different Terraria versions. Update your game through Steam or your store. The server’s version is Terraria version on Startup and appears in the console as Terraria Server v1.4.5.6 (or newer). If you need the server on a different version, open a ticket.

Your character can’t join the world

Journey worlds only accept Journey characters, and Classic, Expert and Master worlds don’t accept Journey characters. Create a matching character, or create a new world with the right World difficulty. New worlds on our servers use Journey unless you change it first. See world size and difficulty.

Wrong password

Type the password exactly. If you just changed it, restart the server so it applies. See server password.

You are banned

Check banlist.txt in Files for your name or IP. See bans and guests.

The server is full

Player slots sets how many players can be online at once. It is fixed by your hosting plan. Type playing in the Console to see who is online.

Still can’t connect?

Collect the last console lines, the time you tried and the exact message in the game, then open a ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Can I join with a domain name instead of an IP?

Yes, if you set one up with Subdomain. Enter it instead of the IP, and still use the port.

Can console or mobile players join?

Our servers run the official PC dedicated server, made for players on the PC version of Terraria with the same version number.

Why does it say “Lost connection”?

Check the version, the character type and the console for errors at the time you joined, then work through the quick checks above.
