Instant Travel: Pylons

Pylons provide an essential “Fast Travel” network across the biomes of Terraria. However, on dedicated servers, players often encounter errors such as “The Pylon is not in the correct biome” or “You are not close enough to a Pylon.” These are usually caused by NPC status or server-side protection plugins.

Core Requirements

For a Pylon to function as a teleportation node, it must meet these criteria:
  • Biomes: The Pylon must remain in its native biome. A Jungle Pylon will stop working if the surrounding area becomes too corrupted or crimson.
  • NPC Housing: At least two living NPCs must have valid housing assigned within the Pylon’s immediate radius.
  • Combat Status: Pylons are disabled during active Boss Fights or Invasions.

Server-Specific Troubleshooting

  • Desync: Occasionally, the server may believe an NPC has moved out of range when the client sees them still there. Attempting a server restart or “killing” and respawning the NPC often fixes this.
  • TShock Regions: If you have protected your base using TShock regions, ensure that the region allows for “Living” entities. If the region flag prevents NPC pathfinding or housing, the Pylon will fail.
  • Plugin Fixes: For large servers, we recommend the PylonOverride plugin, which can be configured to ignore the 2-NPC requirement, providing a more stable teleportation experience.
