To fix Terraria server lag on FREAKHOSTING, open Game settings and expand Performance and safety. Set Enemy smoothing to a value such as 15 to stop enemies skipping around (lower numbers are smoother but use more bandwidth; 0 is off), and turn on Slow liquids if lots of water or lava is moving. Click Review and save and restart. Type settle in the Console to settle all water.

What kind of lag do you have?

How to set Enemy smoothing

1

Open Game settings

Open your server in the Game Panel and click Game settings under GAME SETTINGS.
2

Expand Performance and safety

Click Performance and safety to expand it before typing.
3

Set a value

Enemy smoothing “Reduces enemies skipping around, at the cost of more bandwidth.” New servers start at 0 (off). Click Default to use 15, or type a value from 0 to 60. Lower numbers mean smoother enemies and more data.
4

Save and restart

Click Review and save, then Save changes, and restart. The Public server preset also turns on smoother enemies.
The value is stored on Startup as NPCStream and written to npcstream in serverconfig.txt at every start.

How to reduce liquid lag

  1. Turn on Slow liquids in Performance and safety (“Limits how many liquids move at the same time”). Liquids then take longer to settle.
  2. Type settle in the Console to settle all water now.

Check server load

Open Statistics while players are online. Our test server used about 0.6 GiB of memory after starting a small world. If memory or CPU is near your plan’s limit during play, fewer players at once or a smaller world helps. Small worlds load and save faster than large ones.

Settings that don’t help on a hosted server

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Enemy smoothing value?

15 is the default the panel offers. Go lower if enemies still skip, higher if players have slow connections.

Does a large world cause lag?

Large worlds need more memory and take longer to save and load. Size can’t be changed later, so pick it before the first start.

Why does lag spike every few minutes?

The server saves the world every 10 minutes. Short pauses at those times can be saves. See autosave and backups.
