Don’t compress Counter-Strike 1.6 FastDL files as .bz2. Valve’s FastDL documentation lists bzip2 compression only for newer Source games such as Team Fortress 2, not for GoldSrc games like CS 1.6. Upload your maps, sounds, models and sprites uncompressed to the right folders in cstrike; the FastDL already set up on your FREAKHOSTING server serves them from there as they are.

Why .bz2 is a Source engine habit

Guides for Counter-Strike: Source, Garry’s Mod and Team Fortress 2 tell you to put a .bz2 copy of every file on the web server, because those Source games can download the compressed copy. Counter-Strike 1.6 runs on the older GoldSrc engine. Valve’s FastDL page says only that “more modern Source games, including TF2, support and may even require hosted files be compressed in bzip2 format”. It doesn’t say this for GoldSrc, so CS 1.6 players need the original files. If your server or web folder only holds de_custom.bsp.bz2, a CS 1.6 player looking for maps/de_custom.bsp finds nothing.

How to prepare files for CS 1.6 FastDL

1

Collect the custom files

Gather every custom file players need: the .bsp map, its .wad textures, .res file, sounds, models and sprites.
2

Keep them uncompressed

If you only have .bz2 copies (for example from an old Source server), extract them first with a tool such as 7-Zip, so you have the original .bsp, .wav and other files.
3

Upload them to cstrike

Upload them with the File Manager or SFTP to the right folders inside cstrike, for example maps/de_custom.bsp, de_custom.wad, sound/ambience/custom.wav. FastDL offers them to players from there; you don’t change sv_downloadurl.
4

Test the download

Load the map with changelevel de_custom and join from a game that doesn’t have it yet. The map should download when you connect.

Can I still save bandwidth?

Remove custom maps and files you no longer run from cstrike. Smaller custom maps and sounds also download faster. If you use your own web host instead of the built-in FastDL, the same rule applies there: upload the uncompressed files with the same folder layout as cstrike.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need .bz2 files for Counter-Strike 1.6?

No. Use the original, uncompressed files. Valve documents .bz2 FastDL only for newer Source games.

Can I keep both the .bz2 and the normal file?

Yes, extra .bz2 files don’t stop anything working. CS 1.6 players use the uncompressed file, so the .bz2 copies only take up disk space.

Where do I find my server’s custom files?

In cstrike on your server, in the same folders the map or plugin installed them to. The built-in FastDL serves them from there, so you only need to download them if you use your own web host.
