Each Hytale world has its own settings file: universe/worlds/<world>/config.json. To turn on PvP, stop the server, open that file in Files, set "IsPvpEnabled": true, click Save Content and start the server. The same file controls fall damage (IsFallDamageEnabled), NPC spawning (IsSpawningNPC), paused time (IsGameTimePaused) and saving. PvP is off and fall damage on by default.

Before you start

  • Your server must have started once, so the world and its config.json exist. If it never has, see getting started.
  • Make a backup. A typo in a JSON file can stop the world from loading.

How to change a Hytale world setting

Stop the server

Stop the server. Hytale rewrites its config files while it runs, so edits made while it is running are likely to be overwritten.

Open the world's config.json

Click Files, open universe, then worlds, then your world’s folder (for example default), and click config.json.

Change the value

Find the key and change true to false or the other way round. Keep the quotes, colons and commas exactly as they are.

Save

Click Save Content. If you make a mistake, the file’s History lets you restore the version from before your save.

Start the server

Start the server and check the change in game.
Example: PvP on, fall damage off.

Saving and ticking keys

Leave DeleteOnUniverseStart on false. With true, your world is wiped at every start. Don’t change Seed, UUID, WorldGen or ChunkStorage on a world you play in.

Is there an easier way to switch off PvP and fall damage?

Yes. On Game settings, the Friendly server preset sets “No PvP, no fall damage”. Click Presets, choose Friendly server, then Review and save and restart.

Can I have PvP in one world and not another?

Yes. Each world in universe/worlds/ has its own config.json, so you set IsPvpEnabled per world.

Why did my change disappear?

You edited the file while the server was running, and Hytale overwrote it. Stop the server, edit again and start it.

How do I stop the day and night cycle?

Set IsGameTimePaused to true in the world’s config.json, with the server stopped.
