To add a custom campaign to a Left 4 Dead 2 server, upload the campaign’s .vpk file to left4dead2/addons/ with the File Manager or SFTP and restart the server. Type maps * in the console to find the campaign’s first map, then load it with changelevel <mapname> or set it as Start map. Every player also needs the same campaign installed, usually by subscribing to it on the Steam Workshop.

Before you start

  • Get the campaign as a .vpk file. If you subscribed to it on the Steam Workshop, the file is on your PC in left4dead2/addons/workshop/, named after its Workshop ID.
  • Large campaigns upload faster with SFTP.

How to install a custom campaign

Upload the .vpk

Open Files, go to left4dead2/addons/ and click Upload. Pick the campaign’s .vpk file.

Restart the server

Restart the server so it loads the new add-on.

Find the map names

In the Console, type:
The list shows every map the server has. Look for the new campaign’s maps. The campaign’s download page usually names its first map.

Load the campaign

Type changelevel <mapname> in the console, for example changelevel c1m1_hotel for a built-in map. To start on it every time, set Start map in Game settings > Start-up and click Review and save.

How players get the campaign

Players need the same .vpk on their PC, otherwise they can’t load the map. The simplest way is to share the Steam Workshop link so everyone subscribes before joining.

Why can’t players join after I loaded a custom campaign?

They don’t have it. Each player must install the same campaign version. If they get a consistency error instead, see fix consistency errors.

How do I remove a campaign?

Delete its .vpk from left4dead2/addons/ and restart. If Start map points to one of its maps, set it back to a built-in map such as c1m1_hotel first.

Can I add several campaigns?

Yes. Upload each .vpk. Each one uses disk space, so check Statistics or the disk card on the Console page.
