SuperVersus is a SourceMod plugin that lets a Left 4 Dead 2 server run more than 4 survivors and 4 infected, for example 8 survivors in co-op or 8 versus 8. It sets the team sizes with l4d_survivor_limit and l4d_infected_limit, but it does not raise the player limit itself. For that you also install the L4DToolZ Metamod plugin and set sv_maxplayers (0 to 32).

  • Make a backup in Backups.

What each part does

Without L4DToolZ the server stays at the normal limit. Without SuperVersus extra players join but there are no extra survivors for them.

How to set up a SuperVersus server

Install L4DToolZ

Download the Linux build of L4DToolZ from its GitHub page and upload its files into left4dead2/addons/ as its instructions say. It loads through Metamod:Source. If you installed the L4D2 Competitive Rework, L4DToolZ is already included.

Install SuperVersus

Download the SuperVersus plugin from its AlliedModders thread and upload the .smx to left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/plugins/.

Set the limits in server.cfg

In Game settings, click server.cfg: open the raw file and add, for 8 survivors and 8 infected:
For an 8-player co-op server use sv_maxplayers 8 and l4d_survivor_limit 8.

Restart and check

Restart the server. In the Console, type meta list (L4DToolZ should be listed) and sm plugins list (SuperVersus should be running).

How players join a SuperVersus server

Game lobbies are built for 4 or 8 players, so extra players join by address. Turn Lobby only off in Game settings (or click Allow direct connections on the note at the top) and players type connect 203.0.113.10:27015 in the developer console. L4DToolZ also has sv_force_unreserved 1, which keeps the server open for connect after a lobby has joined it. If players beyond 8 still can’t join after these steps, open a ticket and ask us to check the server’s -maxplayers start option.

Does SuperVersus need Left4DHooks?

Check the requirements of the SuperVersus version you download. Many current L4D2 plugins need Left4DHooks.

Why is my game “session full” at 4 or 8 players?

L4DToolZ isn’t loaded or sv_maxplayers isn’t set. Type meta list and sv_maxplayers in the console to check.

Is more than 32 players possible?

No. L4DToolZ allows sv_maxplayers from 0 to 32.
