“Failed to verify username” means your Minecraft server asked Mojang to confirm the player’s account and got no valid answer. Usually the player’s login session has expired: they should fully close Minecraft and the launcher, sign in again and rejoin. It also happens when someone joins with a cracked (non-premium) client while the server checks accounts, which it does by default.

What causes “Failed to verify username”?

How players fix it

1

Restart the game and launcher

Quit Minecraft and close the launcher completely, then open them again.
2

Sign out and in

In the launcher, sign out of the Microsoft account and sign in again. This renews the session.
3

Check the account

Make sure the account owns Minecraft: Java Edition and is the one selected in the launcher.
4

Join again

Rejoin the server with the same address.

How server owners check it

1

Read the console

On the Console page, look for the player’s name around the time they joined. A failed check names the player.
2

Check if it's everyone

If every player fails at once, Mojang’s authentication is likely having trouble. Wait and try again. Our status page shows problems on our side.
3

Check your network setup

On a Velocity network, backends run with Allow cracked players on, and players must use the proxy’s address. See Velocity proxy setup.
Don’t switch on Allow cracked players just to fix this error. It turns off account checks for everyone, so anyone can join with any name, including yours. Player UUIDs also change, so inventories and permissions appear lost.

Frequently asked questions

Is “Failed to verify username” a server problem?

Rarely. In most cases the player’s login session has expired, and signing in again fixes it. If every player gets it at once, Mojang’s login service is the likely cause.

Does turning off online mode fix it?

It hides the error, but it removes account checks for everyone. Only do it if you really want non-premium players, and then use a whitelist and a login plugin.

Why does it happen after I change my Microsoft account?

The launcher keeps the old session. Close the game and launcher, sign out and sign in with the new account.

Can a VPN cause it?

It can make the login check fail. Ask the player to try without the VPN.
