To change the name of your Hytale server on FREAKHOSTING, stop the server, open Files, open the Server folder and click config.json. Replace the text of "ServerName", click Save Content and start the server. The default name is Hytale Server. In the same file, "MOTD" sets the message of the day, which players see when they log in.

Before you start

  • Your server must be logged in to a Hytale account once. If it never has, see getting started.
The Server section of Game settings is not available for Hytale servers yet; edit config.json in the Server folder instead.

How to change your Hytale server name

Stop the server

Stop the server. Hytale rewrites its config files while it runs, so edits made while it is running are likely to be overwritten.

Open config.json

Click Files, open the Server folder and click config.json.

Edit ServerName

Replace the text between the quotes of "ServerName". This is the name shown to players.

Add a message of the day (optional)

Type a welcome text between the quotes of "MOTD". Leave it empty ("") to show nothing.

Save

Click Save Content. If you make a mistake, the file’s History lets you restore the version from before your save.

Start the server

Start the server. It shows the new name from now on.

In-game name or panel name: which is which?

Changing the name on Settings doesn’t change what players see. Use Server/config.json for that. See server settings and reinstall for the panel name.

Why does my server still show the old name?

The server reads config.json only when it starts. Check that you clicked Save Content with the server stopped, then start it. Players may also need to refresh their server list.

Why did my new name disappear?

You probably edited config.json while the server was running, and Hytale overwrote it. Stop the server, edit the file again and start it.

Will my server appear in a public list with this name?

Hytale’s official server discovery is planned but not available yet. Players add your server by its address.

Is there a length limit for the server name?

The panel doesn’t state one. Keep it short, so it is easy to read in the game.

Does changing the name affect my world?

No. The name is only a label. Your world in Server/universe/worlds stays as it is.
