Frequently asked questions

Yes, with the free Geyser and Floodgate plugins on a Paper server. Bedrock players need their own port, so open a ticket and ask for an extra port. See crossplay with Bedrock.
Paper for plugins and most servers. Fabric or NeoForge for mods. Vanilla if you want no changes at all. Velocity if you’re building a network of several servers. See choose a server type.
They are mod loaders, and a mod only works on the loader it was made for.
  • Fabric: light and quick to update. Popular for performance, technical and smaller content mods. Most mods need Fabric API.
  • Forge: the classic loader. Many older modpacks use it.
  • NeoForge: a newer fork of Forge. Most big modpacks for Minecraft 1.20.2 and newer use it.
Use the loader your mods or modpack ask for. Installing a modpack sets the right one for you.
Yes, if you go to the same or a newer version. Make a backup, then use Version Changer with Delete Server Files off. Never go back to an older version with the same world: it can corrupt it. See change your version.
Yes. Zip the world folder, upload it in Files, unarchive it and set it active on the Worlds page. See upload your own world.
Yes. Click Modpacks, choose CurseForge (or Modrinth or Feed The Beast), pick the pack and click Install modpack. The pack version must have a server pack. See install a modpack.
The pages only show versions that match your server’s Minecraft version and loader. Try Show all versions, another Source, or check you’re on the right server type. Some authors don’t allow downloads from other sites: download the file yourself and upload it to mods/ or plugins/ in Files.
Set Player slots in Server Properties. In practice, the limit is your plan’s memory and CPU, and what plugins or mods you run. See the RAM guide.
Click Players > Opped > +, enter your username, choose level 4 and click Look up player, then Add operator. See make someone an operator.
Add yourself and your friends on Players > Whitelisted, then switch on Whitelist in Server Properties and save. See use the whitelist.
Click Backups > Create backup. To back up every day, set up automatic backups. Installing a modpack makes a backup for you first. See backups.
Yes. At your domain provider, create an A record (for example mc.example.com) pointing to your server’s IP. If your port isn’t 25565, also add an SRV record named _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com with your port and target mc.example.com. Players can then join with mc.example.com. See network and subdomains.
Server Properties doesn’t have this setting yet. Stop the server, open server.properties in Files and set:
The link must be a direct download of the .zip. Optionally add the pack’s SHA-1 to resource-pack-sha1 so players re-download it when it changes. Start the server.
Yes, by editing level-seed in server.properties. A seed only applies to a new world. See custom world seed.
Hybrid server types such as Arclight, Mohist and Youer can, and you’ll find them in Version Changer. They are handy, but not every plugin works with every mod. For the most stable server, choose either plugins (Paper) or mods (Fabric or NeoForge).
Consoles run Bedrock Edition and can’t add custom servers directly. With Geyser installed, players can use workarounds such as BedrockTogether or BedrockConnect. See crossplay.
