Winter in the Wasteland

The Frosty Winter mod, developed by Grimes, dramatically transforms the landscape of American Truck Simulator (ATS) into a freezing winter environment. More than just a visual overhaul, it introduces sophisticated snow physics that fundamentally alter vehicle handling, providing a unique challenge for even the most experienced drivers.

Installation & Deployment

Because the Frosty Winter mod is distributed as an external asset rather than through the Steam Workshop, it requires a manual installation process for both the server and every participating driver.
1

Acquire the Mod Files

Download the latest .scs files from the official Grimes Mods website. Ensure you select the version that corresponds precisely with your active ATS version.
2

Upload to Server Directory

using the Game Panel File Manager or an SFTP client, upload the .scs assets into the /mod/ directory on your server.
3

Update the Server Manifest

Register the mod filenames within your server’s package manifest (typically server_packages.sii) to ensure the server recognizes and enforces the mod requirement.
4

Synchronize with Drivers

Distribute the download links to all members of your convoy. Every player must have the identical file version in their local mod folder to prevent connection rejection.

Impact on Driving Mechanics

The Frosty Winter mod is a gameplay-altering modification that requires a change in driving strategy.
Road surfaces lose significant traction. You will notice significantly extended braking distances and a high probability of jackknifing or sliding off the road when attempting high-speed maneuvers or sharp cornering.

Critical Synchronization

If a driver attempts to join without the mod active while the server has it enabled, they will experience severe physics “desync.” Their truck will operate with standard road friction while others are sliding, leading to visual errors and collisions. Always ensure the entire convoy is using the exact same Frosty Winter files.

Technical Optimization

Winter mods introduce high-resolution snow textures and particles. If your drivers report FPS drops, encourage them to disable the “High Quality Snow” optional addon if they are using one.
Ensure that no other weather or lighting mods are active simultaneously, as these frequently conflict with the specialized shaders used by the Frosty Winter mod.
