GriefPrevention is a free plugin that lets players protect their own builds with land claims. To set it up on a FREAKHOSTING Paper server, install GriefPrevention from the Plugins page and restart. Players claim land by right-clicking two opposite corners with a golden shovel and use /trust <player> to let friends build. By default, new players get 100 claim blocks plus 100 per hour of active play.

How to install GriefPrevention

Make a backup

Click Backups, then Create backup.

Install the plugin

Click Plugins, search for GriefPrevention and click Install next to the version for your server. See install plugins.

Restart

Restart the server. GriefPrevention creates its config in plugins/GriefPreventionData/.

Test a claim

Join, hold a golden shovel and right-click two opposite corners of an area. The claim’s border shows in glowstone and gold.
Add CoreProtect too. GriefPrevention protects claimed land, and CoreProtect lets you roll back damage outside claims.

How do players claim land?

Default limits from GriefPrevention’s config: To change these, stop the server, edit plugins/GriefPreventionData/config.yml in Files and start it again.

A good setup for a survival server

  1. Install GriefPrevention and CoreProtect from Plugins.
  2. Protect spawn with /adminclaims and a golden shovel.
  3. Tell players how to claim in your rules or welcome message: golden shovel, two corners, /trust for friends.
  4. Use LuckPerms to give helpers commands such as griefprevention.ignoreclaims only if they need them.
  5. Review config.yml after a week. If players run out of claim blocks quickly, raise Claims.BlocksAccruedPerHour.

How do sub-claims work?

A sub-claim is a smaller area inside your claim with its own permissions, for example a shared storage room. Run /subdivideclaims, mark the area with the golden shovel, then use the trust commands while standing in it. /restrictsubclaim stops it inheriting permissions from the main claim. /basicclaims puts the shovel back to normal.

What is the GriefPrevention unstuck command?

It’s /trapped. It moves you out of a claim you can’t build in. There is no /unstuck command in GriefPrevention.

How do I give a player more claim blocks?

Run adjustbonusclaimblocks <player> <amount> in the console, for example adjustbonusclaimblocks Steve 1000.

How do I protect spawn?

Run /adminclaims, then claim the spawn area with the golden shovel. Admin claims don’t use anyone’s claim blocks.

Can I change the claim tool?

Yes. The claim tool (golden shovel) and the investigation tool (stick) are set in config.yml. Restart after changing them.

Does GriefPrevention work on Fabric?

No. GriefPrevention is a Bukkit plugin for Paper and its forks. On a mod loader, look for a claim mod on the Mods page instead.
